The long-time patient advocate steps into the leadership role to continue advancing education, support, and research for the sleep disorder community.

Key takeaways:

  • Diana Kimmel is the new board chair of the Hypersomnia Foundation.
  • Kimmel has been a community advocate since her idiopathic hypersomnia diagnosis in 2011, previously leading the foundation’s Patient Advocacy and Advisory Council.
  • In her new role, she aims to continue the fight for support, education, and research for those affected by hypersomnolence disorders.

The Hypersomnia Foundation recently appointed Diana Kimmel as its new board chair. Kimmel brings over a decade of patient advocacy and lived experience to the leadership position.

Diagnosed with idiopathic hypersomnia in 2011, Kimmel has dedicated herself to supporting individuals with the sleep disorder. Her previous roles include founding a long-running idiopathic hypersomnia support group in Atlanta and running the Hypersomnia Alliance. Within the Hypersomnia Foundation, she has served on the board of directors and led the organization’s Patient Advocacy and Advisory Council.

Dedicated to service, Kimmel has organized numerous events and placed a strong emphasis on volunteer involvement within the foundation. Her advocacy efforts have reached individuals and communities both within and outside the US.

“My roots lie in this community’s fight for support, education, and research. Leveraging my relentless advocacy and hope to find true wakefulness for our community, I am honored to step into this role with my ongoing commitment to ensure that no one faces sleepiness from hypersomnolence disorders in isolation,” says Kimmel, board chair of the Hypersomnia Foundation, in the August 5 edition of SnoozeNews, the Hypersomnia Foundation newsletter.

The foundation notes that Kimmel’s leadership is rooted in compassion and an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of those with idiopathic hypersomnia and related sleep disorders. The organization plans to continue its mission to educate, empower, support, and advance research under her guidance.
