On the first day of the cycling programme in Glasgow, Loughborough’s performances were well worth the wait as an incredible one gold, three silver, and one bronze were achieved across multiple events.  

This was backed up by track and field athlete Zac Shaw, who won a blistering gold in the Men’s 100m T12.

Shaw, who spoke to Loughborough Sport about his challenges battling grief, stormed through to dedicate the title to his late mum. His time of 10.39 saw him cross the line ahead of South Africa’s Masala Makatu and Canada’s George Quarcoo to become Commonwealth Champion for the first time.

Cycling once again proved why it’s one of the Commonwealth Games’ most captivating sports as a raucous Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome played host to another unforgettable evening of action.

The Welsh Women’s Sprint team, including Loughborough student Rhian Edmunds, stole the headlines with a rapid gold medal performance in a new Commonwealth Games record of 46.760secs.

Edmunds, alongside teammates Emma Finucane and Lowri Thomas broke the record for the second time in the day leading qualifying with a record time of 46.972secs.

Wales’s time was 0.180secs quicker than rivals Team England as current student Sophie Capewell took silver with compatriots Katy Marchant and Rhianna Parris-Smith.

Fellow current student Iona Moir won the bronze medal race for hosts Scotland, brilliantly pipping Australia to a podium place.

Earlier in the day, more records were broken, with Loughborough Lightning Cycling athlete and former student Morgan Newberry breaking the world record on the way to silver in Women's C4-C5 4000m Individual Pursuit.

Newberry’s time of 5:05.764 was almost half a second fastest that the existing record that was broken in the bronze medal race by New Zealander Nicole Murray.

There was also medal glory in the Men’s Sprint as Joe Truman – another current student and sports scholar – won a stirring silver for Team England. In a tactical battle, Australia came out on top by just over half a second.
