Hansa chair: “Too many boards spend far too much time looking inwards”

Following a change of chief executive and a sharper strategic focus, Hansa Biopharma is entering a decisive phase in the US market. As the company prepares for what comes next, chair Peter Nicklin is clear about his own role: to lead the board, but never dominate it.

”Leading the board does not mean dominating the board. It means facilitating, and ensuring that the board operates in the right way. The chairman is not the boss of the board. The chairman's role is to chair—to hopefully get the best out of each of the board members.”

One of the most common shortcomings of many boards, Nicklin believes, is that they devote too much time to what has already happened. He divides the board’s responsibilities into three main areas: strategy, leadership and governance – in that order.
