DPhil student Klaudia Krawiecka has won a national competition in Finland for the best information security thesis. She was the first woman to receive the award, which was presented at a ceremony on 24 October in Helsinki.

Klaudia’s thesis introduced a new technique that uses widely available trusted hardware for protecting users’ passwords and other types of sensitive data in web servers. The thesis, which was for her master’s degree at Finland’s Aalto University (in the Secure Systems Research Group), was entitled ‘Improving Web Security Using Trusted Hardware’. It was done as part of the Intel Collaborative Research Institute for Secure Computing and the Tekes Cloud-assisted Security Services project.

Klaudia graduated with joint degrees from Aalto University, and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, which she joined as part of the Erasmus Mundus joint Master's Degree Programme in Security and Mobile Computing. The thesis was advised by Helsinki-Aalto Center for Information Security’s Dr Andrew Paverd and supervised by Professor N. Asokan.

Klaudia is now at the Centre for Doctoral Training in Cyber Security in Oxford.
