Kathleen Richards in Surviving Fred & Rose West: Inside Cromwell Street
UK broadcaster UKTV has commissioned a two-part documentary, Surviving Fred & Rose West: Inside Cromwell Street (2×60′), for its streaming service U.
The U&Original series is produced by Zinc Media-owned factual specialist Red Sauce and will also air on U&W.
Irish broadcaster Virgin Media Television has pre-bought the series, with international distribution handled by BossaNova Media.
The documentary centres on Kathleen Richards, one of the last surviving victims of abuse at 25 Cromwell Street, who moved into the Gloucester home of serial killers Fred and Rose West at 17 years old, alongside her sister. Six bodies were already buried at the property at the time.
The two-parter traces Richards’ escape from Cromwell Street in the late 1970s, the discovery of the murders in 1994, her testimony at Rose West’s trial, and her subsequent recovery. Contributions come from family, friends, journalists and police connected to the case, along with psychologist Dr Elly Hanson and Fred West biographer Geoffrey Wansell.
The series was commissioned by Kirsty Hanson, former senior commissioning editor at UKTV, with Helen Nightingale, head of factual and factual entertainment commissioning, and ordered for U and U&W by Hilary Rosen, commissioning director. Nightingale and Tom Edwards of Red Sauce are executive producers, with Chelsea Randall as series director.
The doc is in production and will launch on U and U&W in the autumn. It is among a slate of unscripted commissions from UKTV that also includes Outback Terror: The Falconio Murder, Paul C Brunson: Red Flag and The Search for Leah Croucher: A Parent’s Nightmare.
