OpenMouse is developing an open-source, browser-based control panel for gaming mice, with cross-platform WebHID support and Logitech HITS compatibility planned.
The post OpenMouse aims to replace proprietary gaming-mouse software with one open-source control panel appeared first on ThinkComputers.org.
OpenMouse is a forthcoming open-source control panel designed to manage gaming mice from multiple manufacturers through a web browser. Using WebHID, the hardware-agnostic project could provide a cross-platform alternative to applications such as Logitech G Hub, while expanding access to mouse configuration on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Key takeawaysOpenMouse remains in early development, but its planned scope is already attracting attention.
OpenMouse is intended to reduce the need for installing separate manufacturer applications to change basic mouse settings. Because it relies on the WebHID API, users will need a compatible Chromium-based browser, but the approach is designed to work across Windows, macOS, and Linux.
The project’s browser-based model may be particularly useful for Linux users and people who regularly move between operating systems. It also avoids requiring a dedicated background application for occasional adjustments, although users will still need to grant the browser access to their connected device.
Settings are deliberately limited for safetyRather than attempting to expose every proprietary function immediately, the developers are initially focusing on settings considered safe to modify. The demonstration interface can show battery level, firmware version, and connection mode while allowing users to adjust core tracking and performance parameters.
The current controls include DPI, polling or report rate, lift-off distance, and motion synchronization. Performance, Buttons, and Profiles tabs are visible, but their implementations remain incomplete. Wireless configuration and offline operation, similar in concept to Wooting’s Wootility, are also planned.
Broad early compatibility across gaming miceDespite its early status, OpenMouse lists support for several popular models. The current lineup includes the WLMouse Beast G, Beast X, and Huan; Endgame Gear’s OP1 8K and OP1we; the Pulsar X2 CrazyLight; Logitech’s Superlight 2C, Superlight 2, and Superstrike; and the Orbital Pathfinder.
The Logitech G Pro X2 Superstrike is a notable inclusion, although some features are still missing. Developers are also working on support for newer Finalmouse models and the Hitscan Hyperlight.
Logitech HITS support is on the roadmapOpenMouse has indicated that support for Logitech’s HITS inductive switch technology and related haptic features is being developed. If delivered, that expansion could make the project more useful for owners of newer premium gaming peripherals that typically depend on proprietary software.
The team expects to begin an early-access test soon. Until then, the project remains unavailable to the public, with development and device-support discussions continuing through its community channels and code repository.
