Islam Makhachev received a FaceTime call from Khabib Nurmagomedov after UFC 284.

Makhachev defeated Alexander Volkanosvk at the event in Perth in a thriller that saw the Russian win by unanimous decision.

Volkanosvk was trying to become a two-weight champion but fell short on the night, despite insisting he won several rounds of the bout.

Khabib, a former UFC champion in his own right, formerly coached and mentored Makhachev, who was emotional in the call.

The win took the Russian's record to 12 consecutive victories.

While the two friends spoke in Russian over the phone, Khabib could be heard calling Makhachev 'the pound for pound king' in English.

In his post-match press conference, Makhachev explained the details of the call.

He said: 'He was so nervous. And he say: "Hey, why don't you do, this, this and this?"

'And I said: "Hey, if you came to [Perth] and you were in my corner I can do this. .But you didn't come.'"

Khabib then wrote a message to Makhachev on Instagram his Instagram account.

The post read: 'Simply the best. Proved it in a hard, competitive fight against the best active fighter on the planet. 

'There is always something to work on. But this story will remain for a long time in the sport.

'Just have a flashback on your memory of who topped the best regardless of weight category from Eurasia in the history of MMA, there was only a couple of fighters and Islam was already on that list.'

Commenting on Twitter after, Volkanovski stated his belief that won rounds two, three and five.

He posted: 'Just watched the fight, I definitely think I won [rounds] 2,3 and 5. Surprised I didn't get my hand raised! Let's do the rematch, anywhere, anytime!'
