The blue-and-orange baskets are the same size as the ones DSNY uses on sidewalks.
Five lucky New Yorkers won Knicks-themed litter baskets on Friday in a contest the Department of Sanitation held to celebrate the team’s championship victory.
The winners were randomly selected from more than 125,000 people who entered the week-long contest, DSNY said.
The blue-and-orange baskets are roughly 20 pounds and 28 inches tall, the same size as the ones DSNY uses on sidewalks.
Alfonso Bravo, of Kingsbridge Heights; Daniel LeVert, of Bedford-Stuyvesant; Mia Manantan, of East Harlem; Gabriela Manzanares, of Long Island City; and Gina and Scott Simas, of Dongan Hills, all won litter baskets, DSNY said.
Some of the winners had innovative ideas about how they plan to use their trash cans. Several said they plan to use them as tables or decorations.
In a statement, Bravo said the basket was “a symbol of what this run meant to me.”
"I work for CUNY BMCC, and it's something I can definitely share with my students. Anything is possible as long as you have hope and perseverance, as long as you work hard,” he said. “I’m definitely not going to use it to put garbage in. It's going to be something to remember this victory. It could be something I use in my job, something that has more meaning."
“I'm a big fan of the Patrick Ewing, Allan Houston, Larry Johnson era. To see them make a run toward the championship again — they really united the city this year,” Manantan added, calling her basket “iconic.”
"I'm just going to keep it in my home as a conversation piece for people to ask about. Should I put basketballs in it? Should I make art from it? I'm very excited to have it,” she said. “It's a nice piece for the house to tell a story years from now, to talk about this time in New York when all of this was happening."
If you’d like to get in on the fun, “Only NY” sells smaller kitchen waste baskets painted in the same color scheme, and even smaller commemorative pen holders.
