Collaboration across newsrooms can help to serve communities in deeper, more impactful ways. In metro Detroit, this takes shape through the Collaborative Detroit Newsrooms Network, where Outlier Media leads a group of newsrooms that collaborate around stories, issues and events. The members include Detroit Free Press, Bridge Detroit, Outlier Media, Chalkbeat Detroit, Michigan Public, WDET (101.9 FM) and WXYZ (Channel 7).

Instead of covering the exact same meetings or events, we share resources and cross-publish each other’s stories. This allows each newsroom to lean into their strengths and not duplicate efforts. Newsrooms divide the roles and work as a team to finish more complex stories between the journalists who are partnering on the work. This approach helps us reach more people in the community and serve in more meaningful ways through our coverage of important updates and issues.

When I started my RJI Student Innovation Fellowship at Detroit Free Press, this collaborative network was already in place but my mentors wanted to expand our work within this collaboration through social media experiences that tell Detroit more about the why, how and who of the collaboration.

We see social-first content as an opportunity to let our communities know why we collaborate and how these efforts help us serve them in stronger, more impactful ways. We are currently working on a video to highlight this collaboration and a video showing how the journalists work together behind the scenes.

How local newsrooms collaborate for you
Video 1: The community explainer

The first video is about the whole collaboration. We will show which newsrooms are collaborating and how this is benefitting the local community. This video will involve visual storytelling using creative graphics and narration.

When newsrooms share their resources, they get to invest more effort on a single topic. This helps to reach a more diverse audience, deepen the impact and strengthen the depth of the journalism.

Every newsroom has its own strengths and community relationships. When journalists from different outlets team up, there’s an opportunity to bring unique experience and skillsets to the project. By bringing together different strengths, collaboration can help ensure that diverse community perspectives are accurately represented and given much more in-depth, impactful coverage.

Video 2: The collaborative workflow

The main focus of the second video is to show behind the scenes of local journalists collaborating on a project across newsrooms.

One journalist from Detroit Free Press and one from a partner newsroom will appear together in the video and will share their experience of working on the project together. Once the video is ready, all the newsrooms involved in the collaboration will share it on their platforms.

Next steps

As more journalists go through this process, their firsthand experiences and feedback will create a natural learning loop for newsrooms collaborating and sharing their experiences. Over time, we hope this feedback will help us understand what works and what doesn’t, and where the collaboration and production bottlenecks occur.

Detroit is serving its community better through this model, and any newsroom can look at this framework to make their own local journalism stronger and more impactful through similar collaborations.
