At least three Green Hills communities will host household hazardous waste collection events this fall, allowing residents to safely dispose of potentially hazardous materials.

Trenton’s collection is scheduled for Sept. 12 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Trenton Street Department off 16th Street. The event is intended to provide residents with a safe and environmentally responsible method for disposing of hazardous household materials.

Additional collection events are scheduled in Bethany and Chillicothe. Harrison County’s collection will be held Oct. 10 at 301 S. 28th St. in Bethany. Livingston County’s event is scheduled for Oct. 17 at the Chillicothe Municipal Utilities warehouse, 1515 Waterworks Road.

Each collection is sponsored by its respective city in cooperation with Region B of the Solid Waste Management District. Fees will be charged for the disposal of certain items at the events.

Latex paint is no longer accepted at the collection sites. The Solid Waste Management District advises residents disposing of latex paint at home to open the cans and add cat litter or a commercial paint hardener to solidify the liquid. After the paint has completely dried and hardened, the cans may be placed with regular household trash.

Residents seeking exact details about the fall collection events, information about acceptable materials, or answers to other questions may contact Program Administrator Brandy Jones at the Solid Waste Management District’s Trenton office at 660-359-5636, extension 20.
