Binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy (BIO) has been the standard care for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) examinations. With a growing number of preterm infants and a shortage of pediatric ophthalmologists, telemedicine approaches with contact fundus photography have emerged to address this gap. However, contact fundus photography is undeniably stressful on these neonates—requiring topical anesthetic, eyelid speculum placement, eye manipulation, and bright-light exposure.
