In this issue of JAMA Ophthalmology, Oatts et al present a prospective diagnostic accuracy study of children referred for failed vision screening, which is apropos of the daily care of pediatric patients in both primary care and specialty eye care settings. Vision screening programs across the US vary by state-level policies, screening techniques, examination timelines, and repeat screening criteria. For example, the California Department of Education’s latest guide for vision screening in public schools includes 57 pages of procedures, protocols, legal provisions, and frequently asked questions with 9 different screening techniques including distance and near acuity, color vision, instrument-based functional screening for special needs, and optional tests. Updated recommendations and referral criteria for instrument-based screening tools are provided on the California school nurses organizations website because the technology is constantly evolving.
