A Cult 16-Bit RPG May Finally Get an Official US Release on PS5 1

Super Nintendo’s Terranigma has never officially released in the United States, due to various issues involving its licensing rights.

The 16-bit real-time RPG first released in Japan back in 1995, and was published by Nintendo in Europe a year later.

But the closure of Enix’s US offices at the time mean Americans have never had an opportunity to play this cult classic, which is part of a trilogy also featuring Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia.

That is until now.

While a full announcement is not planned until 24th August, a teaser trailer from retro publisher Clear River Games all but confirms a contemporary port.

The video includes a copyright notice at the bottom, mentioning publisher Square Enix, original developer Quintet, and illustrator Kamui Fujiwara, the mangaka behind the game’s character designs.

It’s generating a lot of excitement online, as our friends at Nintendo Life consider this a 10/10 title.

While no platforms have been announced, Swedish company Clear River Games tends to release its titles everywhere, so I’d fully expect this to be emulated on the PS5 with quality-of-life improvements. There’ll probably be a physical release as well.

A full announcement is expected during the Pixel Arcadia showcase next week, which may be well worth a watch if you’re a fan of retro games.
