England posted 202 for 7 after 20 overs, recovering from a mid-innings collapse. The side had been 105 for 5 before Will Jacks provided late impetus, finishing unbeaten on 53 from 22 balls. Jacks’ fifty was his first in T20 internationals and was reached in 21 deliveries, the quickest fifty by an England batter at a T20 World Cup.

Jarvis Banton contributed 30 from 21 deliveries earlier in the innings as England rebuilt to post their highest total of the tournament so far.

Italy, appearing in the tournament for the first time, mounted a serious charge in reply. Ben Manenti compiled 60 from 25 balls and Grant Stewart added 45 from 23, pushing Italy into contention during the middle overs.

With the target narrowing late in the innings, Sam Curran took a crucial catch at short third to dismiss Stewart. In the final over Jamie Overton claimed the remaining wickets and finished with figures of 3 for 18 as Italy were bowled out for 178.

The victory secures England a place in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup. England advance from Group C despite mixed results in the group, which included a final-ball win over Nepal, a loss to the West Indies, and close victories against Scotland and Italy.

Italy are eliminated from the tournament and will play their final group match against the West Indies in Mumbai on Thursday.

England’s Super 8 opponents are not yet confirmed; the next phase for them begins in Sri Lanka this coming Sunday.

Sri Lanka, officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is an island country in South Asia, located in the Indian Ocean southwest of the Bay of Bengal and southeast of the Arabian Sea. Sri Lanka has been called “the pearl of the Indian ocean” because of its shape and location.
