Overview

The group stage of the T20 World Cup enters its final week with six Super 8 places still undecided. West Indies were the first side to secure a berth and India joined them after defeating Pakistan. The following outlines what each remaining team must do to move into the Super 8s.

Tournament format and qualification rules

The top two teams from each of the four groups (A–D) advance to the Super 8s. Those eight teams will be split into two pools of four and each will play three further matches against the other teams in their Super 8 group.

If teams finish level on points after the group fixtures, ranking is determined first by number of wins and then by net run-rate.

Pre-set Super 8 groupings (if the seeded sides qualify) are as follows:

  • X group: India (X1), Australia (X2), West Indies (X3), South Africa (X4)
  • Y group: England (Y1), New Zealand (Y2), Pakistan (Y3), Sri Lanka (Y4)

If any seeded team fails to progress, the team that qualifies in its place will occupy that slot.

Group A Remaining fixtures
  • Pakistan v Namibia (18 Feb, 09:30)
  • India v Netherlands (18 Feb, 13:30)
Qualification scenarios
  • India have already qualified for the Super 8s.
  • Pakistan can advance by beating Namibia in their final match.
  • USA have completed all group matches and sit second at present; they would be overtaken if Pakistan win, or could be displaced depending on the Netherlands’ result and net run-rate calculations.
  • Netherlands must defeat India and hope Pakistan lose; net run-rate could then decide the second qualifying place.
  • Namibia have been eliminated from contention.
Group B Remaining fixtures
  • Australia v Sri Lanka (16 Feb, 13:30)
  • Ireland v Zimbabwe (17 Feb, 09:30)
  • Sri Lanka v Zimbabwe (19 Feb, 09:30)
  • Australia v Oman (20 Feb, 13:30)
Qualification scenarios
  • Sri Lanka will progress with a win over Australia. If they lose, they would likely need to beat Zimbabwe to stay in the race, with net run-rate potentially deciding matters. Two wins would guarantee qualification.
  • Australia could be eliminated if they lose to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe beat Ireland. They may need to win both remaining fixtures and rely on net run-rate.
  • Zimbabwe secure a place with two wins; a single win could be sufficient but would probably come down to net run-rate.
  • Ireland must win their final match and require other results to favour them; they can only qualify on net run-rate.
  • Oman are out of contention.
Group C Remaining fixtures
  • England v Italy (16 Feb, 09:30)
  • Scotland v Nepal (17 Feb, 13:30)
  • West Indies v Italy (19 Feb, 05:30)
Qualification scenarios
  • West Indies have already sealed their place in the Super 8s.
  • England must beat Italy to progress; a defeat would most likely eliminate them on net run-rate.
  • Scotland need a win over Nepal and also require Italy to beat England, with net run-rate potentially determining the outcome.
  • Italy must defeat England; two wins would guarantee advancement. A win against England plus a washed-out match with West Indies or favourable net run-rate outcomes could also see them through.
  • Nepal have been eliminated.
Group D Remaining fixtures
  • Afghanistan v UAE (16 Feb, 05:30)
  • New Zealand v Canada (17 Feb, 05:30)
  • South Africa v UAE (18 Feb, 05:30)
  • Afghanistan v Canada (19 Feb, 13:30)
Qualification scenarios
  • South Africa are well placed to qualify. Their place could be confirmed if UAE lose to Afghanistan; a win against UAE in their final game would also guarantee progression.
  • New Zealand most likely need to win their remaining game and hope UAE do not win both of theirs; net run-rate could decide the outcome if points are level.
  • UAE would probably need to win both remaining fixtures and would still be likely dependent on net run-rate.
  • Afghanistan must win both of their last two matches, including a game against UAE, and hope that UAE and New Zealand fail to collect the necessary points.
  • Canada need victories in both remaining fixtures and favourable results elsewhere to have a chance.

How net run-rate is calculated

Run-rate is the average runs a team scores per over in an innings (for example, 140 runs from 20 overs equals a run-rate of 7.0). Net run-rate (NRR) for a team across a tournament is the difference between the average runs per over they score and the average runs per over scored against them.

If a team is bowled out before using their full quota of overs, their run-rate for that match is still calculated using the full allotment of overs (20 in this tournament) as the divisor.

The side with the higher net run-rate holds the advantage when teams are level on points and wins.
