Goodbye!

So it's the perfect 10 for Max Verstappen and the perfect 14 for Red Bull.

The Dutchman is the first driver in Formula One history to win 10 races in a row, while Red Bull have now won all 14 races this year and will be pleased with Sergio Perez finishing second.

A word for Carlos Sainz, who fought superbly to finish third ahead of Charles Leclerc.

That concludes our coverage for today, don't forget to keep an eye out for the full race report and more reactions from Monza.

Thanks for joining us and goodbye for now.

MAX VERSTAPPEN WINS

Max Verstappen wins the Italian Grand Prix and his 10th race in a row, a new Formula One record!

Perez finishes second, with Sainz and Leclerc third and fourth respectively and Russell fifth. Hamilton comes sixth after a five seconds penalty, with Albon seventh, Norris eighth and Alonso ninth.

Bottas rounds up the top-10.

15:38

Lap 51 of 51

Near disaster for Ferrari! Leclerc locks-up at the first chicane and almost slams into the back of Sainz, but somehow avoids collecting his teammate.

A true hear-in-the-mouth moment for Ferrari fans.

Ferrari.png

15:37

Lap 50 of 51

Ferrari have told Leclerc not take any risks, which is an interesting approach given he and Sainz have gone at each other for the past five laps.

Ferrari.png

15:35

Lap 49 of 51

Sainz locks up again going into Turn 1, but holds off Leclerc, who slides perilously out of the second Lesmo turn.

At the front, Verstappen is as tranquil as a man can be while driving at 200 miles per hour, with Perez comfortable in second place.

Ferrari.png

15:33

Lap 47 of 51

Sainz's tyres are shot and Leclerc zips past him on the main straight, but goes wide at the first chicane and comes under pressure from his teammate at Curva Grande, who edges past him again.

Sainz locks-up into the second chicane but remains ahead of his teammate. This could go horribly wrong for Ferrari.

Red_Bull_Racing.png Ferrari.png

15:31

Lap 46 of 51

Perez finally gets ahead of Sainz, whose valiant resistance comes to an end at the first chicane, which should calm the Red Bull driver's nerves.

Hamilton, meanwhile, continues his surge and gets past Albon at the first chicane.

Red_Bull_Racing.png Ferrari.png

15:30

Lap 45 of 51

Perez gets past Sainz at last, but he goes too far for his brakes and has to give up his place to the Spaniard after cutting the chicane.

The Mexican is raging at Sainz again, while his engineer pleads for calm. Elsewhere, Hamilton passes Norris at Turn 1 and is closing in on Albon.

Mercedes.png

15:28

Lap 44 of 51

Hamilton has a five seconds penalty for causing the collision with Piastri, while Alonso has moved up to ninth and Bottas is 10th.

Albon continues to struggle but Norris can't get past him.

Red_Bull_Racing.png Ferrari.png

15:26

Lap 43 of 51

Perez is still struggling to get past Sainz, which has led Leclerc to close up to the two. The Red Bull driver complains of Sainz 'moving late' to defend his line, with the stewards likely to keep an eye on this.

Mercedes.png Mclaren.png

15:25

Lap 41 of 51 - Hamilton and Piastri collide

Hamilton and Piastri collide! Hamilton has better traction out of the first chicane and gets alongside Piastri at Curva Grande, with neither of them giving an inch going into the second chicane.

But they touch and while they rejoin the track, Piastri has to pit after sustaining damage to his front wing.

Red_Bull_Racing.png Ferrari.png

15:23

Lap 41 of 51

Perez looks to make a move on Sainz, who defends gamely and keeps his Ferrari in second place for now.

Mclaren.png

15:22

Lap 40 of 51

McLaren try to trick Williams into pitting Albon by calling Norris in, but to no avail. I don't think anyone bought that, it was the textbook telegraphed move.

Albon holds onto to sixth with the two McLaren behind him, as Piastri has to defend his place from Hamilton.

Mclaren.png

15:19

Lap 38 of 51

Norris gets past Albon at the first chicane but he outbrakes himself and has to give his position back, which further plays in the hands of Hamilton.

'He forced me off,' Norris grumbles on team radio.

'I was completely alongside him and he saw me.'

Mercedes.png

15:17

Lap 36 of 51

Hamilton is complaining about his tyres, but he continues to close in on Norris and Piastri in seventh and eighth, who have been slowed down by Albon.

Red_Bull_Racing.png

15:14

Lap 35 of 51

No changes in this lap, with the top-10 looking as follows.

1. Verstappen

2. Sainz

3. Perez

4. Leclerc

5. Russell

6. Albon

7. Norris

8. Piastri

9. Hamilton

10. Alonso

Red_Bull_Racing.png Ferrari.png

15:11

Lap 32 of 51

Perez is through! A case of third time lucky as the Red Bull is again far too fast for Leclerc down the main straight and the Mexican gets up to P3 without any issues this time.

Red_Bull_Racing.png Ferrari.png

15:10

Lap 31 of 51

Perez is far closer to Leclerc down the main straight now as Leclerc has no DRS, but the Ferrari driver defends for all his worth and keeps the Mexican behind him.

Perez tries to get past again at Curva Grande and down the second chicane, but Leclerc again keeps him at bay and the Red Bull's right rear kicks up a huge amount of dust as Perez has to lift his foot off the gas.

Red_Bull_Racing.png Ferrari.png

15:08

Lap 30 of 51

Perez looks to move past Leclerc at the first chicane, but the Ferrari driver has other ideas and slams the door shut. How long he can keep doing that for, is a different matter.

Elsewhere, Hamilton has gone past Alonso on fresh tyres, while Norris and Piastri have closed up on Albon, who is struggling badly with his tyres.

1693750533404_lc_galleryImage_MONZA_ITALY_SEPTEMBER_03_.JPG

Red_Bull_Racing.png Ferrari.png

15:06

Lap 29 of 51

Verstappen is about six seconds ahead of Sainz and, you suspect, en route to a record-breaking 10th consecutive win unless something drastic happens.

The race for the podium is very much on between the two Ferraris and Perez, who is currently fourth, just over a second behind Sainz.

1693750570639_lc_galleryImage_MONZA_ITALY_SEPTEMBER_03_.JPG

Mercedes.png 60x60_pitstop.png

15:04

Lap 27 of 51

Sainz and Leclerc get past Hamilton just before Parabolica, with Perez following suit as the seven-time world champion pits and reemerges onto the track just behind Alonso in 10th place.

Ferrari.png Red_Bull_Racing.png

15:02

Lap 26 of 51

Perez is sitting on Leclerc's gearbox coming out of the Parabolica, but is slightly too far to make a move down at turn one as the Ferrari survives for now.

Red_Bull_Racing.png

15:01

Lap 25 of 51

Verstappen breezes past Hamilton to regain the lead, while Sainz hammers away another fastest lap. The hard compound tyres seem to be working really well for the Spaniard so far, which will be a relief to Ferrari as Perez looms ominously behind Leclerc.

60x60_pitstop.png Mclaren.png

14:59

Lap 24 of 51

Hamilton is in the lead as Piastri finally pits, with Verstappen ahead of Sainz and Leclerc.

Piastri comes out of the pits and almost collides with Norris, with his teammate just squeezing past him.

Meanwhile, George Russell has been given a five seconds penalty for gaining an advantage after leaving the track.

60x60_pitstop.png Mclaren.png

14:57

Lap 23 of 51

Norris pits, while Piastri and Hamilton are currently the top two and Verstappen is already up to third.

Piastri, Hamilton, Bottas and Ocon are the only drivers yet to pit.

60x60_pitstop.png Ferrari.png

14:54

Lap 21 of 51

Verstyappen and Leclerc are both into the pits and out without any issues. Sainz stopped a lap earlier and gets just ahead of Leclerc at the first chicane, while Perez leads from Piastri and Norris, with Hamilton and Alonso fourth and fifth.

60x60_italy.png

14:51

Lap 19 of 51

Here's the current top 10:

1. Verstappen

2. Sainz

3. Leclerc

4. Perez

5. Russell

6. Piastri

7. Norris

8. Hamilton

9. Alonso

10. Bottas

Red_Bull_Racing.png

14:49

Lap 17 of 51

Verstappen hasn't wasted any time in making the clean air count and has just set the fastest lap of the race after leaving Sainz in his wake., Surprisingly, Ferrari haven't pitted Sainz, who must have a large flat spot on his tyre following the lock-up on Lap 15.

Red_Bull_Racing.png Mercedes.png

14:47

Lap 16 of 51

Perez overtakes Russell again and this time he makes it stick, comfortably getting the Red Bull's nose ahead of the Mercedes to climb up to fourth.

14:46

Lap 15 of 51 - Verstappen takes the lead

Verstappen leads! He attacks Sainz down the main straight, forcing the Spaniard into a big lock-up. Sainz fights back into Curva Grande and goes toe-to-toe with the Red Bull, but Verstappen edges ahead just ahead of the second chicane.

1693749003798_lc_galleryImage_MONZA_ITALY_SEPTEMBER_03_.JPG

Red_Bull_Racing.png Mercedes.png

14:44

Lap 14 of 51

Perez finally gets past Russell at the end of the main straight, but both cars go off the track and the Mexican hands the position back.

Not that he is particularly happy about it: 'He pushed me off,' he says on the team radio, but a replay suggests he may have just hit the brakes too late.

1693749022201_lc_galleryImage_Mercedes_driver_George_Ru.JPG

Red_Bull_Racing.png Mercedes.png

14:41

Lap 12 of 51

Perez is again looking to get past Russell at the first chicane, but there is still nothing doing as the Briton makes his Mercedes as big as possible and holds onto to fourth place.

Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso has passed Niko Hulkenberg as has Liam Dawson.

1693748596115_lc_galleryImage_Mercedes_driver_George_Ru.JPG

60x60_pitstop.png

14:40

Lap 11 of 51

Pierre Gasly is the first driver to come into the pits, where he spends longer than he would have liked due to a problem with the jack.

Ferrari.png Red_Bull_Racing.png

14:39

Lap 10 of 51

Verstappen isn't quite in range to attack Sainz at the first chicane despite help from DRS, while Leclerc looks to be dropping down a little. Perez tries again to outbreak Russell, who stands his ground going into turn one.

Mercedes.png

14:36

Lap 8 of 51

No change in the top 10 so far, but some movement among the backmarkers as Liam Lawson has gone past Logan Sargeant to move the only AlphaTauri left in the race up to 12th.

George Russell, meanwhile, does well to defend his position from Perez and is distinctly unhappy when his race engineer instructs him to change engine settings.

'I've got a car up my a**e', comes the reply. And fair enough, really.

Ferrari.png Red_Bull_Racing.png

14:34

Lap 6 of 51

Verstappen has DRS and looks to overtake Sainz at the first chicane. They both brake late, with the Ferrari driver moving slightly to the left to defend his line, much to Verstappen chagrin.

'That was naughty,' the double world champion says on the radio.

Ferrari.png Red_Bull_Racing.png

14:31

Lap 4 of 51

DRS is now enabled, which could spell trouble for Sainz unless he can pull away from Verstappen.

'He's already sliding a bit,' says Verstappen with all the poise of a man who knows it's a case of when not if he will get past the Ferrari.

Ferrari.png Red_Bull_Racing.png

14:29

Lap 3 of 51

Sainz, Verstappen and Leclerc are still the top three, with Russell and Perez behind them.

Albon follows ahead of the two McLarens, with Hamilton ninth and Hulkenberg 10th.

williams.png

14:27

Lap 2 of 51

Albon retakes his spot, overtaking Piastri with ease at the second chicane. Elsewhere, Alonso has lost his 10th place to Niko Hulkenberg.

14:26

LIGHTS OUT AT MONZA

Lights out and away we go at Monza! Carlos Sainz makes the perfect start as he cuts Max Verstappen off to head into turn one in the lead, followed by Charles Leclerc, who gets under pressure from George Russell.

Russell himself is under pressure from Sergio Perez, while Oacar Piastri is up to sixth after getting past Alex Albon, but Lewis Hamilton has slipped to ninth.

14:22

Another formation lap underway

The tyre blankets have come off and the cars are off on their third formation lap of the afternoon.

Fernando Alonso, meanwhile, made the most of the delay and had time to get a little nap in before the start.

60x60_italy.png

14:17

New formation lap in five minutes

We're gonna have a new formation lap in just under five minutes. This is hardly ideal for Carlos Sainz's nerves, or for the engines of the remaining 19 cars which were left stranded on the grid.

60x60_red_flag.png

14:10

Race start aborted

The race start is aborted as the marshals are having issues with removing Tsunoda's stranded car, which means a track has to be deployed to ferry the AlphaTauri out of the way.

The other 21 cars are sitting patiently on the grid, with pit crews sprinting over to assist the drivers.

Confusingly, race control haven't yet officially deployed a red flag, but that's exactly what it is. We're going to have another formation lap and a 51-lap race.

60x60_crash.png

14:06

Yuki Tsunoda is OUT

Yuki Tsunoda's Italian Grand Prix is already over, due to an engine failure. He parks his AlphaTauri on the Parabolica straight and given the track marshals won't have enough time to get the car out of the way, we've another formation lap.

As a result, the race will only be 52 laps long.

60x60_italy.png

14:00

Almost ready to go

We're minutes away from lights out at Monza, where the weather looks absolutely perfect.

The race is 53 laps long, which works out to just north of 190 miles - 306 kilometres.

In other words, we're probably looking at a one pit-stop race. Every driver is on the medium compound tyres, bar Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas who are both on the hard compound.

60x60_italy.png 60x60_new_leader-1.png

13:55

Does it matter to be on pole at Monza?

Charles Leclerc is the only pole-sitter to win at Monza in the past five years, triumphing in 2019.

A year earlier, Lewis Hamilton took the chequered flag after Kimi Raikkonen started from pole-position.

In 2020, Pierre Gasly came up all the way from 10th place to win after Hamilton started from the front of the grid and a year later Daniel Ricciardo won from P2 on the grid, after Max Verstappen took pole.

Last year, Verstappen won after Leclerc started on pole.

60x60_italy.png

13:50

Anthem time

Following last week's trance party-meets-orchestra extravaganza at Zandvoort, the pre-race ceremony is somewhat more low-key at Monza.

Until the nation anthem that is, which gets the crowd going with the help of a military aircrafts roaring above the track just as the music fades.

Ferrari fans will be hoping to hear the anthem again in two hours time.

13:46

First corner chaos?

It speaks for how much Formula One has changed that first corner crashes seem to be a thing of the past, with cars now mostly negotiating the first turn safely in most circuits.

Monza, however, is one of the tracks that still presents a major challenge for drivers in that respect, due to the long run-up between the start line and the first chicane.

Mclaren.png 60x60_quote.png

13:41

Lando Norris expects a difficult race

It is fair to say Lando Norris doesn't share the optimism expressed by Max Verstappen and George Russell.

The Briton qualified ninth and expects a difficult race.

'We have to pick the balance wisely, it's a long race with the two or three stints depending on what we choose with the strategy, but a lot of it is about management today, management of the tyres, choosing the balance wisely,' Norris told Sky Sports.

'We want to go forwards, we want to push forward, we want to try and overtake and get some positions but it's not going to be easy.'

Zak Brown, however, is more upbeat.

'I think we can move forward,' the McLaren CEO tells Martin Brundle on the grid.

60x60_photo.png

13:38

The pit lane is open

The pit lane opened a few minutes ago and the cars have made their way to the grid. Liam Lawson, however, has already complained of a small issue.

'My left mirror has come loose," the AlphaTauri driver says on the radio. 'It's disconnected from the frame.'

13:28

George Russell expects 'a good race'

George Russel is in buoyant mood ahead of the race, which he will start from fourth place on the grid.

'I think we’ll have good race pace,' the Mercedes driver said.

'Tyre degradation doesn’t look high. Never really is here in Monza. With the skinny rear wings, overtaking isn’t actually that easy because even when you open the DRS, you only gain 0.1-0.2secs.

'I expect to have better tyre degradation than Ferrari so our only chance is to be faster at pit stops and do something slightly different.'

Red_Bull_Racing.png 60x60_quote.png

13:22

Max Verstappen confident of winning at Monza again

Max Verstappen is confident he can clinch an unprecedented 10th consecutive win and spoil Ferrari's party at Monza.

'They were quick also last year. Also when you look at their rear wing, it seems like it's quite well optimised for Monza where I think our wing, especially for one lap, is maybe not the best optimisation but for the race normally it should be better,' he said.

'Here in Monza it’s always very tight. Sometimes you might jump ahead, sometimes you're just behind but I'm confident.'

60x60_italy.png

13:19

A reminder of the starting grid

Here's the starting grid for the Italian Grand Prix.

60x60_weather_sunny.png

13:11

Weather update

Rain wreaked havoc at Zandvoort last week, but it's not going to be an issue today. The weather forecast is for sunny skies with temperatures of around 29C for the start of the race.

Ferrari.png

13:07

Home comforts for Ferrari

This weekend has been a remarkable turnaround for Ferrari, who have struggled mightily this season.

Sainz's only podium this season came in the sprint race at the Austrian Grand Prix, while Charles Leclerc finished on the podium in Baku in both the sprint race and the feature race.

And there's no better place for Ferrari to find form than Monza, where the Scuderia has won a record 20 times, but haven't finished top of the pile since 2019.

Ferrari.png

12:58

Sainz dreaming big at Monza

Carlos Sainz is daring to dream of a triumph in front of Ferrari's passionate tifosi on Sunday.

'Dreaming is for free, no?' he said.

'This is one of my favourite sayings. I think we can all dream and no-one can it take away from us.'

Whether the dream can become reality, however, is an altogether different matter and the Spaniard is well aware that keeping Verstappen at bay won't be an easy task.

'The car has been very good this weekend, especially over one lap,' he said.

'But on the long runs, I am not going to lie, it is tricker. It is not the same picture.

'As soon as you put five or six laps on the tyre and everything starts to degrade a bit, it is where we see their strengths and the race pace we have seen all year.

'It is a good opportunity. Being realistic, the Red Bull should be quicker. But we will try to make their lives as complicated as possible and try to take the win.'

60x60_photo.png

12:50

The drivers are out on the track

The drivers took part in the traditional pre-race parade, which essentially features them on some rather splendid vintage cars. The likes of which you can admire below.

Can Max Verstappen set a new record?

Max Verstappen won for the first time in his career at Monza last year and will make history if he finished on the top of the podium today.

The Dutchman has won the past nine races, a record he shares with Sebastian Vettel, and will set a new benchmark if he takes the chequered flag on Sunday.

Verstappen is inexorably marching towards a third world championship and has won 11 of 13 races this season. Worryingly for his rivals, his teammate Sergio Perez has won the other two races - in Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan.

Monza, of course, has stopped winning runs before, most notably in 1988. McLaren had won every race up to the Italian Grand Prix, but Alain Prost retired with an engine failure and Ayrton Senna crashed out.

Red Bull will be hoping to avoid a repeat of that scenario.

12:35

Preamble

He couldn't, could he? Carlos Sainz threw the form book well and truly out of the window on Saturday, putting his Ferrari on pole by 0.013 seconds in a dramatic qualifying session.

Pole changed hands three times in the closing stages of qualifying, with Max Verstappen sandwiched between Sainz and the other Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.

George Russell starts in fourth place with Mercedes, ahead of Red Bull's Sergio Perez, while Alex Albon continued his recent good form and will start sixth in the Williams.

Lewis Hamilton starts eighth, sandwiched in between the McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, while Fernando Alonso rounds up the top 10.

Good afternoon and welcome!

Good afternoon and welcome to Mail Sport's coverage of the Italian Grand Prix.

Carlos Sainz has the tifosi dreaming of glory at Monza as the Spaniard put his Ferrari on pole-position yesterday, while Max Verstappen will start from second place as he looks to win a 10th consecutive race in a row.

Coming up we'll have all the build-up leading up to the race and then all the action from one of the temples of Formula One.

The race is scheduled to start at 3pm local time, 2pm BST.
