Back in April, the discourse around so-called “Botox face” really ramped up a gear on social media, after a clip from the HBO series Euphoria went viral as fans compared Sydney Sweeney’s expressive facial expressions to her costar’s more fixed performance.
While it’s worth noting that nobody knows whether either of the actors have had any cosmetic procedures to their faces, the scene ended up sparking a wider conversation about how Botox can impact an actor’s ability to…well, act. And in the months since this episode aired, plenty of other stars have been accused of inadvertently limiting their facial movements via the age-defying treatment.
And last week, an arguably surprising voice entered the chat, with 43-year-old actor Andrew Garfield surprising fans with an incredibly nuanced take on the situation during his and his Magic Faraway Tree costar Claire Foy’s appearance on Vanity Fair’s Lie Detector Test.
In the video, Claire asked Andrew if he believes that actors can be “too emotional,” to which Andrew confidently said “yes.” When asked who specifically he thought fell into that category, the British star joked: “Me. Me. 100% me.”
But Claire then ramped it up a gear, asking her costar: “Do you think that Botox is preventing that from being a reality?”
“Oh god, that’s tricky,” Andrew replied. “I want to tread a bit carefully here, because I have, obviously, a very particular belief that it would be great if we lived in a society where no one felt the pressure to do anything to their faces. But, unfortunately, I understand that we're in a society where there is a pressure to do stuff to the faces — especially for the women.”
“Do you think that actors doing things to their faces is the reason why other people do things to their faces?” Claire then asked, and Andrew thoughtfully said in response: “I think, for better or worse, people look to people in the public eye to decide what the norm is, or what is quote-unquote ‘aspirational,’ and I think it’s… Yeah, I think there is a responsibility that we have, being in the public eye, to take care of our faces in a natural way.”
And when this clip circulated on X earlier this week, people were impressed by Andrew’s incredibly balanced take on the whole thing, with one popular tweet reading: “The fact they asked someone unlikely of this question and yet he had the best response to it…”
Somebody else wrote: “Andrew Garfield has yet to say something that’ll piss me off like truly such a well spoken caring individual.” While another shared: “i am fortunately always reminded of why i genuinely love this man and why he is my favorite actor of all time 💌 andy, may you remain this eloquent and intelligent 🫂”
The sentiment was the same over on TikTok, where one of the comments on this clip reads: “We love a thoughtful, emotional intelligent, aware man.” Another added: “A very emotionally intelligent stance. I agree,” and somebody else wrote: “Andrew gave a perfect response.”
