As I am sure you know, The Graham Norton Show is one of the most popular celebrity chat shows out there, with the British series highly regarded for its caliber of A-list guests, hilarious moments, and the novelty of all of the stars sitting on host Graham Norton’s sofa together.
Rather than each celeb coming out one at a time to chat to Graham about whatever they are currently promoting, they share the couch with several other names — and this often secures us some incredible moments between stars who otherwise probably wouldn’t have ever crossed paths.
It's fair to say that Taylor Swift’s song “Opalite” is the most iconic example of the magic of Graham Norton, with the singer famously casting all of the people she shared the couch with in the track's music video, with everybody from Graham himself to Lewis Capaldi bagging cameos.
And now, Graham has lifted the lid on the psychology behind the sofa as he broke down exactly how he and his team choose which celeb will sit where — and honestly, it couldn’t be more fascinating. For reference, Graham always sits on the far left of the screen.
During a recent appearance on the Between Two Beers podcast, Graham said: “The person who sits at the far end, you are right there, that person… We have to be confident about that person. Because they are further away, it’s going to be harder to involve them. So they have to be a bit more of a self-starter down the end, which is why it’s often a British comic or American comic down the end, because I can just look at them and they’ll chip in, and that’s what you need from that person.”
“And the rest of the couch is more of a movable feast,” he went on. “I mean, there is this assumption that the person sitting next to me is the biggest star, but often, it’s the… Sometimes we feel like someone will do better if they’re there, if they think I’m making a fuss of them.”
“Sometimes, the biggest star, you might think: 'Actually, they’ll do better if there’s someone on either side of them, they’ll feel more protected, they’ll feel more comfortable,'” Graham explained. “And often, it’s about the product. Often you want the big movie to be up first, so even if the person who’s selling the big movie isn’t the biggest star, they’ll be in that first seat.”

(It’s worth putting on the record that when Graham has a musical guest who isn’t part of the main sofa lineup for the interview segment of the show, the musician will normally sit at the very end of the couch for a few moments after performing.)
Needless to say, everybody was gagged to get so much insight into the logistics of the show, with many praising Graham for the emotional intelligence on display.
Commenting on a TikTok clip from the podcast, one person wrote: “i knew the couch psychology was real, god i love his show.” Another agreed: “Didn’t know he was so intentional about it - no wonder he’s one of the best talk show hosts. Like they just sitting and chatting about nothing but it’s so enjoyable.”
“this is incredibly thoughtful play out,” one more mused, while somebody else wrote: “This is why I love Graham Norton, he is such an emotionally intelligent host and really understands people and it allows both the audience and the celebrities to connect.”
Others shared their observations about where guests have sat over the years. Referencing Taylor — who was sat next to Graham during her most recent appearance — one person wrote: “Ooooh no one tell Taylor Swift this 😂”
Another echoed: “He just dissed all the big stars who sat right next to him over the years including his fav Tom cruise.”
While somebody else wrote: “Ryan gosling always sitting in the middle and it always make sense cause he always bonds with the comedian.”
