Amid Ongoing Conversations About The Ethics Of Surrogacy, Kylie Jenner’s “Refreshing” Take Is Being Applauded

In recent years, more and more people are taking issue with the apparent rise in celebrities welcoming babies via surrogacy, because despite how advantageous it is for people who cannot conceive without medical assistance, it's widely viewed as an exploitative and unethical process. In fact, it's even banned in countries like France and Germany, where it is seen as “violating the dignity of women.”

And so, amid ongoing debates around the ethics of surrogacy, several people have called out celebrities for apparently “normalizing” the process. Earlier this year, for example, Meghan Trainor went viral after revealing that she’d welcomed her third child via surrogate, with one X user writing: “we really need to have a conversation about how surrogacy is exploitation by rich people.”
Meghan later explained that she opted for surrogacy because it was her “safest” choice, telling People magazine: “I want people to know that surrogacy is just another beautiful way to build a family. It’s not something to whisper about or judge. It’s rooted in trust, science, love, and teamwork. Every family’s journey looks different, and all of them are extremely valid.”

Another celebrity whose take on the practice has sparked a divide is Khloé Kardashian, who welcomed her second child via surrogate.

A few years after giving birth to her first child, Khloé and her now-ex-partner Tristan Thompson met with a surrogate therapist while exploring options to expand their family. And in footage that aired across the final season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Khloé appeared completely baffled by the concept of her surrogate's bodily autonomy after the therapist asked how she felt about “fetal reduction or termination due to multiple pregnancies.”
When the therapist informed Khloé that her surrogate might not consent to welcoming “multiples,” the reality star asked, “Don’t they have to go along with our wishes?” She and Tristan later appeared visibly shocked when they were told that the surrogate would have the right to “terminate the pregnancy with any unplanned outcome.”
“Of course, I know it’s her body, my baby, but I really did not put two and two together that that means she has the control whether she would want to, you know, terminate the twin,” Khloé said in a confessional. “Me not having control over that outcome makes me very nervous.”
“I know it’s her body, but I still didn’t know it was really her choice. And that might be really naive to say, but I mean, this is a big eye-opener,” she told the therapist.
With this in mind, Kardashian fans were positively surprised this past weekend after hearing Khloé’s sister Kylie Jenner’s take on surrogacy.

During an episode of Khloé’s new Hulu reality series The Girls: A Khloé Kardashian Project — which follows a bunch of her closest friends, including Malika Haqq and Yris Palmer — Kylie made a cameo amid what fans online have described as an “out of touch” conversation about surrogacy.

Earlier in the episode, Yris, who has two children, and Malika, who has one son, met with a surrogacy matchmaker to discuss the possibility of expanding their respective families. Explaining that the pair had different desires from the surrogacy process, Malika said: “[Yris] kinda just wants to pick her baby up once it’s delivered, and I’m like, I kinda want the woman to live with me. Is that even an option?”

The duo then playfully asked about costs, prompting the matchmaker to inform them that it’d typically set them back between $200,000 to $250,000 — including legal fees, agency fees, and insurance.

The pair later FaceTimed Kylie, who gave birth to two kids, to ask for her opinion on the entire thing.

After Yris informed Kylie of the expensive costs — also noting that she was considering carrying the baby after all and then spending $100K on what the girls later referred to as a “mommy makeover” — Kylie outright asked why she was considering surrogacy in the first place.

Malika’s twin, Khadijah Haqq, then interjected and told Yris and her sister, “But you guys can do it, though.” In response, Malika turned her attention to Kylie and asked if she’d “ever use a surrogate,” to which the beauty mogul said, “I don’t think so.”

Both Malika and Yris immediately said, “I don’t see it on you either.” Kylie continued, “I don’t wanna say no no, but I’m like 99.9% sure I just couldn’t do that. Plus, I have big, healthy babies! Like, there’s no reason for me to really have a surrogate.”
In response to the conversation, some viewers praised Kylie’s “refreshing” take while critiquing how “casually” Malika and Yris discussed the subject.

“It was so weird how casually they said it fr. I liked Kylie’s response about her not having a real medical reason to go the surrogate route too. There’s so many celebrities using surrogates just because they don’t want to carry their own child and it’s now seen as a common luxury that they can afford, so that was refreshing,” one Reddit user said.
“Love Kylie for that,” someone said on TikTok, while another person questioned, “What’s with these people and surrogacy??”

“This conversation is so out of touch,” one more comment read. “the audacity of rich women. The Handmaid’s Tale isn’t so far off,” someone else said in response to Malika and Yris’s remarks.
