Just a few decades ago, the suburbs surrounding the Twin Cities were majority white, but that has shifted dramatically recently. Two-thirds of Brooklyn Center residents are people of color, while Columbia Heights to the north boasts people speaking 36 different languages. Elected officials in these suburbs and others see it as a source of community strength.

Florida-based real estate developer Jamie Rand has purchased two downtown St. Paul buildings — 375 Jackson Street and 135 5th Street — doubling his total of buildings owned and making him the largest private commercial property owner in the city. He compares St. Paul now to Nashville 20 years ago when the downtown was struggling mightily.

“You go back to Nashville now,” Rand said. “Every other block has cranes, new constructions going up. My hope is that 10 years from now, you’re walking down in St. Paul and you’re seeing the same thing: cranes in the air and people building new buildings.”

A report on fraud published by the Star Tribune has gubernatorial candidates Rep. Lisa Demuth and Sen. Amy Klobuchar calling for accountability for members of the Walz administration. Demuth called for Assistant Education Commissioner Daron Korte and Department of Children, Youth, and Families Deputy Commissioner Leah Montgomery to be fired immediately. Although Klobuchar was less pointed, she also made clear her plans for a top-to-bottom audit of state government beginning on Day One if she is elected governor.

New rules regarding green card applicants are set to go into effect Friday that would allow immigration officers to take into account the applicant’s use of public benefits, such as housing and food assistance, Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. More than 20 states are suing to block the new rules, including Minnesota. 

Thousands of parents in Minneapolis are waiting with bated breath for tonight’s announcement of an ominously named “Transformation Plan” from the Minneapolis Public Schools. 

“The three options for program changes, as requested in School Board Resolution 2026-0050, will be presented to the Board at its work session [Tuesday] at 5 pm,” MPS announced in a written statement. “The board will not make any decisions tomorrow. The meeting will be livestreamed and updated information will be available on the district’s website following the meeting.”
