On approach to the Wausau Downtown Airport in Wisconsin, an airplane carrying Rep. Tom Tiffany, who is the GOP nominee for governor in the Badger State, lost power and was forced to land in a nearby lake. Tiffany and the pilot swam to shore, making him not just a gubernatorial candidate but apparently a guber-natatorial candidate. Tiffany escaped with just a few stitches above his right eye.

In the continuing saga of organizations reconsidering their Flock cameras, the University of Minnesota is removing a camera at the intersection of Cedar and Riverside Avenues after pushback from the West Bank community. There are still nine more automated license plate readers operated by UMPD on campus.

The plan to convert the former Star Tribune printing facility in the North Loop into a data center has been abandoned by developer Legacy Investing. Although the company has made no public statement, it appears that greater than expected community pushback played a part in the decision.

The long-term seasonal outlook for Minnesota is pointing towards a warmer than usual winter with less precipitation thanks to a possibly record-setting El Niño. During the last one in 2023-24, the winter temperature was 10 degrees F above normal, and that was a moderate El Niño. This year’s has the potential to be a “super” one.

Torrential rain in the summer of 2024 badly damaged the Rapidan Dam in Blue Earth County, and now an assessment by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has determined that “removal would have a long-term beneficial effect on environmental resources by removing a now-obsolete structure, restoring the project embankments and reestablishing the river channel.”

Craft breweries in the area have been hit hard the last few years, and looks like Summit Brewing is not immune to those financial pressures either. The 40-year-old brewery reportedly has $8 million in unpaid debt and is being sued by lender BMO Bank to collect on their loan, which was backed by the brewery’s property, meaning foreclosure is a possibility.
