This time the hero of the GT line was spotted just outside the Ring, giving us some really clear images of the huge number of wings, scoops and vents covering the front-engined coupe’s bodywork. And the zaniest by far are the sets of active flaps mounted in the top of each front fender, which we assume are designed to vent high pressure air from the wheelhousings when required, and stay closed keeping drag low the rest of the time.

They’re teamed with another set of vents that exit air across the door skins, above the side exit exhausts, and a humungous real spoiler with swan-neck pylons and which appears to have some kind of F1-style DRS functionality. And while the wing pushes from up high to ram the 21-inch Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R rear tires into the pavement, a diffuser that looks like some kind of industrial waste sorting device is pulling the car down to achieve the same goal.

At Least 800 HP Needed

Smart money says there’s some version of AMG’s new flat-plane crank V8 under the hood, the one that debuted last week in the 30-unit limited edition CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung. But the Black Series is going to need a ton more horses than the 637 hp (646 PS) the CLE makes if it’s going to scalp the Mustang GTD. The old Black Series, you might recall, already had 720 hp (730 PS).

And though the 6:48.04 it recorded in 2020 was enough to make it a Nurburgring production car record holder at the time, it’s since fallen to fifth place, well behind the 6:40.83 of the GTD – although technically that was classed as a prototype, not a production car. The true production GTD did 6:52.072. First place? That’s AMG’s own One hypercar, which lapped in 6:29.09 in 2024, an insane time that we doubt even the new Black Series’ wing package can help it beat. But we’d love to be proved wrong.
