A Pompey promotion and Wembley hero is back in League One after a seven-year absence - and once again he’s wreaking havoc.

Jamal Lowe’s scintillating Fratton Park season in 2018-19 saw him plunder 17 goals from the wing and earned a £2.5m move to Paul Cook’s Wigan in the division above.

Now, after seven successive Championship campaigns, he has come back to League One following Sheffield Wednesday’s relegation.

Yet the return to familiar surroundings has invigorated the 32-year-old, who has enjoyed a blistering start to the Owls’ campaign.

Operating more centrally since his Pompey years, either at centre-forward or behind the striker, the former Hampton & Richmond player has bounced back in style after last term’s troubles.

And he has subsequently been starring for Henrick Pedersen’s men, netting in the league, Carabao Cup and Vertu Trophy during a goal-laden opening six weeks of the campaign.

It means Lowe has already totalled more goals than each of his previous two seasons at Hillsborough since joining them on a free transfer from Bournemouth in the summer of 2024.

Fratton Park hero

Before this term, his last League One involvement was for Pompey in May 2019, when he was controversially named on the bench for Kenny Jackett’s team in the second-leg of their play-off semi-final with Sunderland.

Despite being top scorer and trailing 1-0 from the first leg, he wasn’t introduced until the 53rd minute as the match limped to a goalless draw, marking the Blues’ elimination on aggregate.

A protracted transfer to Wigan followed, before finally being concluded in August 2019 to end a memorable two-and-a-half year Fratton Park stay consisting of 29 goals in 119 games, the League Two title and Checkatrade Trophy.

Having scored 23 goals for National South club Hampton & Richmond, the League Two Blues swooped for the attacker - and some 18 months later he scored twice at Notts County to win promotion.

Then, in March 2019 at Wembley in the Checkatrade Trophy final against Sunderland, he scored a stunning goal in a 2-2 draw - before successfully netting in the subsequent penalty shoot-out as Jackett’s men triumphed.

Yet at the season’s end, he moved to Championship side Wigan and later represented Swansea (twice), Bournemouth and QPR at that level, while making one Premier League outing with the Cherries.

Now he’s back in League One for the first time since those Pompey days - and revelling in the opportunity with Sheffield Wednesday.
