John Marquis has once again gone viral on social media.

The Cardinals won the game 5-2 thanks to a hat-trick from the 34-year-old, which was his first since bagging three in Doncaster Rovers’ 5-1 win against Grimsby in 2017.

But it wasn’t the striker’s five goals in six games that was grabbing the headlines following the final whistle at Brunton Park.

Instead, it was goal celebration following one of the two penalties he put past Cumbrians keeper Adam Desbois.

Prior to the spot kick being scored, former Reading and Brighton youngster Desbois attempted to put the veteran forward off by dancing across his line.

Yet his antics had no impact on Marquis, who coolly slotted the ball into the back of the net as his opponent went the wrong way.

But more intent on making the keeper regret his actions, Marquis ignored his pals’ congratulations and went straight to the goal-line, where he proceeded to sarcastically mimic Desbrois’ while also attempting to stare him out.

Then, to ram home his obvious contempt for the keeper, he went to shake the 24-year-old’s hand - only to leave him hanging!

Marquis clearly had the last laugh, but his actions have split fans on social media - despite the number of views it’s generated.

‘Bro turned a penalty into a comedy show,’ wrote @Ridoy9518 on X. @DidiHaith commented: ‘Marquis will never change, always the wind up artist, good to see him still hitting the goal trail.’ Meanwhile, @jakehmfc1 simply said: ‘Some boy’.

However, @aldershot4ever commented: ‘Unsporting conduct should have been booked.’ @AdamKimb wrote: ‘So embarrassing’, while @Dave_Coates said: ‘Absolutely classless that.’

In that period, Marquis has netted 45 goals in 195 appearances for four clubs.
