Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX and chief investment officer at Maelstrom, believes Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) will finish 2026 at $126,000, which he describes as a “foregone conclusion” in a September 1 roundup of year-end predictions. His target is just shy of the all-time high of $126,080, reached in October 2025. This suggests that Hayes anticipates Bitcoin to reclaim its record before the end of the year.

As of October 6, Bitcoin is trading at $86,050, about 32% below its previous high and approximately 30% lower than it was one year ago. This means Bitcoin needs to gain 46% in value in less than three months. Is this a feasible climb before December 31?

Arthur Hayes Links His Bitcoin Prediction to Money Printing

In his analysis, Hayes bases his expectation on increased money printing by governments and central banks. He argues that when the money supply expands, some of this fresh capital tends to flow into scarce assets, driving their prices higher over time. Bitcoin is ideally suited to this scenario, as its supply is capped at 21 million coins, meaning more cannot be created to meet rising demand.

Investors have seen this phenomenon play out before. Bitcoin surged in 2020 and 2021 after the Federal Reserve slashed interest rates to near zero and launched massive bond-buying programs. However, testing Hayes’s theory in just a few months can be challenging. If Bitcoin’s price rises, he can claim the new money has entered the market, but if it falls, he might suggest that the money hasn’t arrived yet.

Hayes’s more ambitious $250,000 prediction is tied to a long-term stimulus environment, yet his $126,000 target has no specified conditions. On September 3, he also reaffirmed what he called a structural Bitcoin long, a position that profits when the price rises. Thus, the year-end prediction serves as a tangible benchmark for investors to assess.

Bitcoin Needs a 46% Gain Before the Year Ends

Bitcoin’s recent price trends illustrate the challenge ahead. In the month leading up to October 5, Bitcoin appreciated about 8% and gained roughly 3% in just the past week. If this momentum continues, maintaining an 8% rise each month, Bitcoin could reach around $108,000 by December, still falling short of Hayes’s target by about $18,000.

Looking at Bitcoin’s market capitalization, currently around $1.73 trillion at $86,050, the coin would need to rise about $800 billion in value to achieve a 46% price increase by December 31.

Additionally, the surge in interest from buyers that previously drove Bitcoin’s record high has slowed. For instance, spot Bitcoin ETFs, investment funds that hold Bitcoin on behalf of shareholders, attracted $6.3 billion in the third quarter but are up only around $1 billion net for all of 2026, after first-half outflows.

Hayes Could Be Right About Bitcoin’s Direction but Wrong About Timing

When Hayes refers to a “foregone conclusion,” he’s suggesting a pre-decided outcome based on his predictions. This claim centers around a specific price at a specific time for an asset that has fallen 30% within a year. Notably, Bitcoin has prompted significant banks to revise their confident forecasts for 2026. Standard Chartered reduced its prediction from $150,000 to $100,000 in February, while Bernstein lowered its estimate from $150,000 to $125,000. Other forecasts vary, ranging from $75,000 to $225,000.

Although Hayes’s timeline may not be accurate, his long-term perspective regarding Bitcoin’s potential could still hold. If Bitcoin reaches $126,080 in 2027, his overarching thesis remains valid, even if his year-end projection does not come to pass. Investors who expected a December 31 target might simply find themselves ahead of the curve rather than wrong.

Will Bitcoin Reach $126,000 by the End of 2026?

Reaching $126,000 by December 31 seems unlikely. Bitcoin would need to gain about 14% each month for three consecutive months, nearly doubling its recent growth rate, without any significant downturns. Buyers would also have to push through the $126,080 record, where those who purchased at peak levels could sell to recoup their investments.

The framing of Hayes’s prediction carries implications for investors. Even if the target isn’t met, his theory on money flow could still hold, as he may argue more money is still on its way. Ultimately, the key takeaway is that if Bitcoin hasn’t surpassed $126,080 by December 31, Hayes’s assertion will have fallen short, even though minor monthly gains could still allow Bitcoin to reclaim its record in 2027.
