Battle-hardened troopers who thrive in harsh combat conditions

Hailing from the frontier and outer-rim worlds, Range Troopers are a step above your standard Stormtroopers. Trained to fight in harsh environments, Range Troopers are equipped with armor and weaponry that allow them to defend the Empire against any enemy they may encounter. Re-released for the newest edition of Star Wars: Legion, Range Troopers are the combat anchor the Galactic Empire needs to hold objectives and keep the enemy out. 

Atomic Mass Games sent us this expansion for review, so let’s dive in and unbox it!

Unboxing Range Troopers

In the box, you get two sprues for the models, bases, unit cards, upgrade cards, and order tokens. Like with all AMG products, there are multiple cards with different languages as well.

Cards for Range Troopers

Unlike other corp units, Range Troopers actually are fielded as Support Units, like a 74-Z Speeder Bike or E-Web unit. Their speed is noticeably slow, but what they lack in movement they make up for in other ways. Rolling red defense dice, they have Armor 1 (allowing them to cancel one hit result), Spur (gaining a suppression to increase speed by 1), and Indomitable (where they roll red defense dice for rallies instead of white). The Spur and Indomitable combo is a nice combo and can help keep your Range Troopers from being suppressed. Scale gives them that extra boost for vertical movement, which is great for taller boards. Advanced Targeting: Trooper 1 is a focus point for this unit. When they target a trooper unit and only have one dice pool, they gain 1 Aim Token right then and there. Focusing fire on the enemy and keeping them pinned down can really help you maintain the advantage with some objectives. 

Upgrade-wise, you can bring a DLT-20A or a T-21A Heavy Weapon Upgrade. The T-21A is similar to the Shoretroopers, only it replaces the Critical 1 for Suppressive, helping the Range Troopers keep enemies at bay. The DLT-20A is a glow-up from the Stormtrooper DLT-19A; it is Range 1-5 (instead of 1-4  and Impact 2 (Instead of Impact 1). For only a 5-point difference, that’s well worth it. And, of course, you can always spend 15 points to add an additional Range Trooper via the Personnel slot.  

Expanding Your Army

Support Units options for the Galactic Empire are kind of limited. For a while, there were some shenanigans with the E-Web Heavy Blaster and GAV Occupier Tank, but outside of that, I haven’t really seen those slots filled all that often… until Range Troopers. What I like about them the most is that they are deceptively slow, but they can be a creeping menace. Used properly, they can be incredibly effective and difficult to remove. They add a lot of mobility and flexibility for a Heavy Unit, and so armies that rely on movement for victory are going to benefit greatly from Range Troopers!

To the Battlefield!

I am really excited to see Rangy build and paint up these pieces for his Blizzard Force for the Galactic Empire Army. I’ve seen two units of Range Troopers melt down enemy armor as well as hold a POI zone without taking a scratch. They are by no means unbeatable; however, if your opponent isn’t careful, Range Troopers can really mess up their strategy and leave them to freeze in the tundra of the frontier!
