Keep an eye on your enemies

The Imperial Probe Droids are available now for the Galactic Empire army for Star Wars: Legion. Having been noticeably absent from the game, they have now made their way to the tabletop to help bolster the Imperial forces. At first glance, they may not look like they do much, but that’s exactly what they were designed to do. Trust us, they’re no meteor!

Atomic Mass Games sent us the expansion for review, so let’s dive in and unbox it!

Unboxing Imperial Probe Droids

In the box, you get a sprue of the models, clear flight stands, unit cards, and order tokens. Like with all AMG products, there are multiple cards with different languages as well.

Cards for Imperial Probe Droids

First and foremost, it’s important to note that Imperial Probe Droid is a detachment unit for Special Forces, meaning that a corresponding Special Forces unit must be included and that they do not count against your maximum allowance of Special Forces units.

For 35 points, they bring a lot for the Imperials. Observe 3 allows them to mark enemy units and allows attack dice rerolls against them. Infiltrate gives it a lot of flexibility for deployment, and both Disengage and Hover: Air 1 provide mobility for it to get into a better position and away from combat. Its 2-white/2-black Light blaster is there if you need it, but with white defense dice, even with the surge, it’s not really meant for combat.

Self-Destruct 3 is a really cool feature. 4 health gives it a little wiggle room for taking hits, but if you feel like it’s not going to survive, you can opt to blow it up. It rolls 3 black attack dice, dealing one wound for each surge and crit, and 1 suppression for each hit. Keep in mind this is not an attack, so the defending unit doesn’t roll defense dice. That could seriously render a unit of troopers ineffective at a critical moment. Of course, it’s a one-time use, but used at the right time, it could be very effective. 

Expanding Your Army

The Imperial Probe Droid is really a good use of 35 points. With no upgrade slots, it can fill in for those ‘unsure of’ points; points where you’re debating bringing an upgrade or two on some quads you may not use. I could see myself running these frequently, especially with my Death Troopers and Scout Troopers. I sorely need rerolls in games, and having the ability to lock in on an opponent’s leader would be really helpful. Thematically, these are perfect for Blizzard Force, so be sure to pick up this expansion before Chewbacca shoots it down!

To the Battlefield!

I am really excited to build and paint up these pieces for my Galactic Empire Army, where I think they’re going to aid in my fight against the Rebellion. A swarm of Probe Droids might just be enough to keep my opponent off balance just long enough to get my army into position for victory.
