Massachusetts’ Golden Dome will have an up-close view of the Red Arrows on Thursday.
The United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force aerobatic team, nicknamed the Red Arrows, is scheduled to perform a special flyover of the State House on Thursday afternoon “in honour of the 250th anniversary of US independence” from Great Britain and to recognize the friendship that has developed between Massachusetts and the U.K., the local consulate announced Tuesday.
The Red Arrows fly “distinctive” BAE Systems’ Hawk T1 jets, often “with their trademark Diamond Nine shape, and combination of close formations and precision flying,” according to the Royal Air Force.
The squad is expected over the State House at 3:10 p.m. Thursday, with a red, white and blue smoke display trailing over the State House and Boston Common. The consulate suggests viewing from outside the Hooker entrance or on Boston Common, and being in position early.
“The Red Arrows are one of Britain’s most iconic symbols. Seeing them fly above the Massachusetts State House will be a spectacular moment and a powerful reminder of the close friendship that has linked the United Kingdom and Massachusetts for generations. We are delighted to share this unique experience with our friends and partners across the Commonwealth,” Consul General for New England David Clay said.
The Red Arrows are in the midst of a five-week tour of the United States, called Operation Eagle Hawk. They will also perform Saturday, July 11 as part of the SailBoston Grand Parade of Sails.
Wing Commander Sasha Nash, the commanding officer of the team, said the pilots are “excited to return to Boston – a location not visited by the Red Arrows since 2019 – and I’m certain the flypasts will further underline the strong, enduring relationship between the United Kingdom and our strongest and closest security partner.”
