Tall ships are converging on Boston Harbor. The event is expected to attract large crowds on land and out on the water.
The ships will parade in on Saturday, and many people will come to see them on pleasure boats.
Public safety has been moving into place across the harbor.
“It’s going to be very congested out here, so we’ll do our best to get out there and keep everybody safe,” said Quincy Police Officer Chris Fish of the department’s marine unit.
Lt. Bob Gillan, who supervises the unit, said it has been doing mock training exercises to test response plans as more than 50 tall ships from around the world head to the Massachusetts coast.
“We have an massive amount of assets,” Gillan explained. “We have a harbor master association from the New Hampshire border to Plymouth that consists of police marine units, state police, harbor masters and marine firefighters.”
Local marinas are also in prep mode.
“We are just kind of scrambling to get everyone ready so they can go out and enjoy the event,” said Matt O’Leary, who works at Marina Bay in Quincy.
Like at any big event, there are rules for parking – even on the water. There is a detailed map put together by the organizer that shows where a boat can stop and anchor, depending on what type of vessel it is.
“We’re just going to patrol those areas and make sure everybody’s contained in those areas, make sure no one’s trying to get into the actual parade route,” said Fish.
Bill Kelly is a sailor out of Marina Bay in Quincy. He is planning to keep a safe distance.
“As close as they’ll allow,” he said. “We’ll see how crowded it is.”
Police are urging people to keep at least 200 yards away from ships that are underway, and 100 yards when they are docked.
“Close enough to get some good pictures, but not too close so that there’s a safety and security factor,” said Gillan.
