Two people are dead and nearly a dozen others injured after gun violence broke out in Boston over the holiday weekend, police said.
Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said Sunday that officers had been called to an “unusually high” number of serious incidents.
“Large gatherings of illegal firearms, alcohol consumption, and multiple acts of gun violence created a dynamic and challenging environment for our first responders throughout the evening,” he said. “There were a lot of parties last night. There were many, many parties last night. And that kind of volume, we’re probably not used to.”
The first fatal shooting happened just after midnight on Sunday, when officers were called to the area of 500 Blue Hill Ave in Roxbury. First responders found three victims with gunshot wounds, who were taken to the hospital. One was pronounced dead, while the other two are expected to survive. A fourth victim later arrived on their own, and is also expected to survive.
In a separate call, around 3:15 a.m. officers were called to 120 George Street in Roxbury for a person shot. There they found three victims. One person, identified Monday as 29-year-old Christopher Washington-Conway, was pronounced dead at the hospital, and a second has life-threatening injuries. The third is expected to survive.
Around 4:06 a.m., three more people arrived at a local hospital with gunshot wounds. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening. Investigators said they were shot at the same location.
Boston police are also investigating three other shootings in the city. One around 11:54 p.m. on Saturday on Fayston Street in Roxbury, another around 12:36 a.m. Sunday on Horadan Way in Roxbury, and another at 1:56 a.m. Sunday on Draper Street in Dorchester. In each of these cases, one person was shot and they are all expected to survive.
“While the overwhelming majority of the public, particularly residents of Boston, enjoyed the Fourth of July in an uneventful and peaceful way, these large parties that we have throughout the city, particularly involving both fireworks and firearms, you know, it has no place in our city,” Cox said.
Roxbury resident Junior Lopes, a veteran, said he woke up to the sound of gunshots on the Fourth of July.
“Someone that’s not in the military, they think it’s like fireworks. No it’s not,” he said.
Lopes says police told him to go back inside his home while they picked up bullet casings off the sidewalk, combing through one of the five different crime scenes from that night.
“I’m afraid of my neighbors getting hurt on account of jerks that don’t care for life,” Lopes added. “I hope the violence doesn’t come back in this neighborhood.”
When addressing public safety concerns, especially during a busy summer, Mayor Michelle Wu stressed that the city continues to work with community leaders every day and is focused on violence prevention at all times of year.
“Prior to this last night, numbers were down compared to last year and we are still at historically low numbers overall, but that is never something that we say to suggest that our work is slowing down or finished,” Wu said. “We will not be satisfied until there is no violence anywhere in the city of Boston.”
Now, Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn wants to come up with a plan to hire hundreds of officers every year, saying in a statement, “Boston is not the safest city in the country.”
Police say these shootings are actively being investigated. No arrests have been announced.
