Workday unveiled new artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities designed to help developers build and deploy AI applications and agents on its platform.

The new capabilities introduced in Workday Build include Developer Agent, which enables developers to build AI applications and agents using natural language from agentic development tools they already use; Agent-Ready Tools, which provide controlled guardrails allowing agents to access human resources (HR) and financial data through the Model Context Protocol (MCP); and Agent Passport, which verifies whether AI agents can be safely deployed based on digital attestations from trusted security and compliance vendors.

Workday said the new capabilities enable AI agents to securely access enterprise data, including financial ledgers, while maintaining trust throughout the development and deployment process. The company said that although existing agent development tools help accelerate coding, they do not comprehensively address data accuracy, security and enterprise compliance requirements. Workday Build's new capabilities are designed to enable rapid AI development while preserving security and enterprise governance.

Developer Agent integrates with widely used agentic development tools, including Claude Code, Cline, Codex, Cursor and Google Antigravity. It also supports the open AgentSkills standard, allowing developers to build and deploy custom AI agents that run on the Workday platform.

Agent-Ready Tools serve as enterprise connectors that enable autonomous AI agents to securely perform tasks such as retrieving records, updating employee benefits information and executing approval workflows. Workday said the tools are optimized for agentic AI and allow agents to leverage richer business logic and contextual information.

According to Workday, hundreds of Agent-Ready Tools connect through open standards such as MCP, allowing AI agents to automatically inherit Workday's security and delegated authorization model, business process controls and audit trail capabilities. When agents need to perform tasks outside the Workday environment, developers can build custom agent actions using prebuilt Pipedream connectors.

Agent Passport supports independent third-party verification by validating whether AI agents meet security and compliance requirements before they are deployed in production. The service identifies which security and compliance tests an agent has passed, who performed the validation and which standards were applied. Workday said Cisco will participate as its first validation partner.

Developer Agent and Agent-Ready Tools are currently available to selected early-access customers through Workday Extend Professional, with general availability scheduled for the second half of this year. Agent Passport will also be offered to early-access customers beginning in the second half of the year.
