Donald Trump has received his own international airport thanks to a gaggle of allies in a Republican bolthole near his famous resort retreat.
The US President's own Boeing 757 made the inaugural landing at Trump International Airport in Palm Beach, Florida, after legislators passed a bill renaming it from Palm Beach International Airport in a move which came into effect on Thursday. The official rechristening of the 89-year-old hub, which primarily serves the US but also "select international destinations", was warmly welcomed by the President's frontman, his son Eric, as it came into effect at 5.01am.
But it has been roundly mocked elsewhere, however, with members of the public noting that the Trump-controlled Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) broke with tradition to honour the deeply unpopular president.
When the President Donald J Trump International Airport changed on Thursday, so to did its designation, leaving aviation obsessives confused as it broke with an age-old practice. The former Palm Beach Airport is now designated DJT, but other airports that have had their names changed haven't been given the same treatment.
One social media user observed: "I didn't think changing identifiers was allowed. Beijing is still PEK, Reagan is still DCA. New Orleans is MSY and Kansas City is MCI. Why can't we change these (and others) to make sense?"
Another user added: "I don't care if the airport is renamed, but why does the code need to change? Louisville's airport's code didn't change when it was renamed Muhammad Ali Int.l Airport in 2019..." A commenter chimed in: "Same with 'Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport' (LIT)"
The decision was widely disliked within Trump-critical circles, with plenty of people commenting on the president's love of having things named after himself.
One commenter on X wrote: "Is this guy self absorbed or what?" Another added: "What an expensive waste of money. Costing everyone." A third said: "FFS. This country is going to s**t" And another commenter added: "Glad to know you are concentrating on the important things."
The airport is just a stone's throw from Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort, around five miles west, and was renamed thanks to legislation passed in February by the Florida legislature, which is controlled by the Republican Party.

Ron DeSantis, a former Trump rival and current Governor of Florida, signed the changes into law before they formally came into effect on Thursday. Eric Trump, the third-eldest of the Trump siblings, tweeted about the renaming and landing Trump Force One on the tarmac early in the morning.
He wrote on X, formerly Twitter : "I am deeply honored that at 5:01 a.m., Trump Force One will be the first plane to land at the newly renamed Palm Beach International Airport — now and forever President Donald J. Trump International Airport (DJT). There is no person who has done more for Florida and our country, and no one more deserving of this incredible honor.
"As a son, and someone who flies out of this airport nearly every day, I will forever be proud to see the initials “DJT” on my boarding pass. Congratulations Dad — I’m happy to have played a big role in making this happen."
