Sony Music Vision, in association with Sony Music Entertainment UK, has unveiled the official cinema trailer for ‘WHAM! 10 Days In China,’ a new documentary exploring the iconic pop duo’s groundbreaking visit to China in 1985.
The documentary delves into the story behind WHAM!’s landmark tour, examining the circumstances that made it possible, the impact it had on audiences, and the lasting legacy of a cultural moment that helped bridge East and West through music. The film will receive a worldwide cinema release on July 28 before later airing on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer this summer in association with the BBC.
The newly released trailer offers a glimpse into one of the most significant chapters in pop music history. WHAM!, comprised of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, became the first Western pop group to perform in China, staging historic concerts in Beijing and Guangzhou at a time when live Western pop performances were virtually unheard of in the country.
Their visit took place under strict governmental guidelines and represented far more than a concert tour. It marked a pivotal moment in cultural exchange, introducing a new style of music and performance to Chinese audiences while significantly expanding WHAM!’s international profile.
Drawing from meticulously restored and newly digitised archive footage, much of which has never been seen before, ‘WHAM! 10 Days In China’ revisits the tour through the perspectives of those who lived it. The documentary features interviews with members of the band’s team, eyewitnesses, and Chinese fans who experienced Western pop culture firsthand during a transformative period in the nation’s history.
The film explores the intersection of music, politics, and global change, capturing a moment when two young pop stars found themselves at the centre of a cultural milestone. Through rare footage and personal recollections, the documentary paints a vivid picture of China during a period of significant transformation and highlights the role WHAM! played in opening new cultural conversations.
