What to KnowShark Summer 2026Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San DiegoLa JollaJuly 1 through Aug. 2Educational talks, shark feedings, and “shark exploration stations” are some of the highlights and included with admissionOceans at Night: Sharks, a separately ticketed evening event for 21-plus guests, is July 9
SHARK WEEK, Discovery’s annual dive into the fascinating realm of the ocean’s toothy denizens, captivates viewers each summer, as do the cinematic blockbusters that regularly feature the gargantuan, gill-rocking superstars. But there’s another way to take a sharky swim, at least in scholarly spirit, when the heart of summer arrives: By pointing your fin in the direction of Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, that La Jolla nexus of science, wonder, and an oversized shark mouth which you can step inside. True, the fanciful creation isn’t an actual shark, but the snapshot spot has become a favorite for those visitors swimming over to the aquarium’s Shark Summer. The month-long event returns July 1, 2026, and most offerings, except for an evening festivity, are included with admission.
Shark Summer begins July 1 at Birch Aquarium in La Jolla.
RAYS IN FOCUS: Both sharks and rays will be in the spotlight during the informative celebration, thanks to the aquarium’s team-up with AZA SAFE Shark and Ray. “The SAFE (Saving Animals from Extinction) Shark and Ray program is a collaborative effort by more than 60 organizations nationwide to work together to save the more than 1200 species of sharks and rays worldwide from extinction through evidence-based education and communication,” revealed the aquarium. Visitors will be able to spend time at educational stations, listen to talks, and observe shark feedings, all to deepen their understanding of sharks and rays and “the vital role they play in the ecosystem.”
MAKING “A POSITIVE IMPACT”: Aquarist Brent Fish gave further insight into the program that is one of Shark Summer’s educational inspirations. “Birch Aquarium is teaming up with the AZA SAFE Shark and Ray program to make a positive impact on shark and ray conservation,” said Aquarist Brent Fish. “We’re highlighting this unique and diverse group of animals to raise awareness of how important they are and the threats they face.” Hoping to attend the nighttime party July 9? Guests 21 and older will party at the aquarium’s Oceans at Night: Sharks celebration, with the opportunity to chat with shark scholars, shake their fins to music, and “nerd out on all things shark.” Tickets are on sale now for the jaw-inspiring jamboree.
