THE PACIFIC OCEAN AND TALL SHIPS? They’re a tight and timeless twosome, and if you adore spying a vessel with massive masts in the distance, you likely know about some of the best-known celebrations along our coast, including Dana Point’s annual September ship-tacular. Sometimes, though, a tall ship will call upon a port for a short spell at a different point of the calendar, all to share some maritime marvels and terrific learning opportunities. The Mystic Whaler, a 110-foot schooner with two massive masts, is one such striking example, and anyone who is the Ventura Harbor area over the final days of May will have the opportunity to admire it. And if you know your schooner history, you’ll likely recognize that New England cargo ships from the 19th century served as the inspiration for the built-in-the-1960s vessel, a vibrant meeting of past and present. But the biggest present of all? It’s the Mystic Whaler’s commitment to STEM education and connecting with young visitors through deck tours and learning activities.
THE MYSTIC WHALER… arrives at Ventura Harbor May 20, and deck tours will be available on select dates through May 31; the ship must sail on starting in June, so plan your Ventura visit soon. Stepping aboard the ship is free (though there is a recommended donation of $5 for adults); guests are invited to “… explore the storied ship, meet the crew, and learn the ropes of schooner life.” Some special activities for kids, like The Mystic Whaler Dockside Plankton Lab, will pop up on certain dates, too (May 23 and 30, so note it on your calendar). And the Ship in a Bag, which will offer more oceanic activities for youngsters? That’s set for May 24 and 31. Discover more about the Mystic Whaler, which hails from Santa Barbara, and other happenings coming ashore around Ventura Harbor Village this May.
