A man who police said was shooting into traffic and later shot at officers in the east Las Vegas Valley was shot and killed by police early Wednesday afternoon, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Capt. Adam Seely said officers responded to an area near East Lake Mead Boulevard and North Sloan Lane, east of North Nellis Boulevard, at around 12:30 p.m. after dispatch received calls about a man firing a gun into traffic in the area.

The man ignored commands when confronted by police, and started to shoot at the officers, according to Seely. He said police returned fire and struck the man.

Responding medical personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene. No officers or civilians were injured, Seely said.

The man’s identity was not released.

The shooting happened a short walk from the Robert Price Recreation Center.

Reginald Sturdivant lives down the street from where the shooting occurred and said he regularly drops by the recreation center, a community resource frequented by seniors.

As he walked through the area on Wednesday, he found everything cordoned off with crime scene tape.

“It is very disturbing because this is usually not an area where you would have something like that — because of the seniors and a lot of kids running around here,” he said.

Police did not release the names of any of the officers involved in the incident. As of late Wednesday afternoon, traffic continued to be rerouted off East Lake Mead near the scene.

It was the sixth shooting to involve a Metro officer this year, police said.
