Tall ships parade into Boston, kicking off dayslong festival (schedule, photos)

Дата публикации: 11-07-2026 08:44:21

The world’s most iconic tall ships arrived in Boston Harbor on Saturday, parading in flotillas to officially kick off Sail Boston 2026.
The Parade of Sail, featuring some 60 Tall Ships from around the world, kicked off at 9 a.m. and wrapped up around 4 p.m. For everyone watching, it was a truly unforgettable experience.
Saturday’s Parade of Sail was the highlight and the start of several days of festivities in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, including ship tours, educational events, and two nights of fireworks.
Saturday was also expected to be the festival’s busiest day. Public viewing of the parade was projected to be spectacular from Castle Island, the Seaport District, the Downtown Boston Waterfront, East Boston, the North End, and Charlestown, according to the Sail Boston website.
Sail Boston had said it was expecting more than a million visitors for this year’s event. Security is high, and numerous street closures and parking restrictions are in place. Organizers have urged spectators to use the MBTA and other public transportation options to access the events if possible due to the large crowds expected to attend.
“We get to celebrate our independence and there is no better city in the world to do it than right here in Boston,” U.S. Marines Maj. Gen. John Kelliher said.
It’s the biggest Sail Boston event this city has seen in decades.
“I’ve been to tall ships before in 2017 in Seaport, but this is a whole new experience,” one woman said.
The ships rolling in represent more than 20 countries, with the U.S.S. Constitution leading the way.
“I like the one from Columbia was absolutely beautiful, and of course the Eagle when it came in,” another woman said.
“The Ecuador one looks pretty cool,” a man shared. “I mean, they’re pretty majestic.”
Some are experiencing the breathtaking spectacle for the first time, while others couldn’t wait to take it all in once again.
“This was the first time seeing them actually come into Boston, which is really a treat,” another attendee said.
“We’ve been at a number of these starting in 1776, ha ha ha. No, 1976. And then every one since, we don’t want to miss them,” an older gentleman told us.
“This reminds me of 1976. My whole family was here. Here I am 50 years later. I’m absolutely blown away yet again,” another spectator noted.
It was an amazing day on the waterfront, and the crowds seemed to love it. Many said it’s one thing to see the tall ships sail into the Harbor, and it’s another to go on them.
The ships will be docked in locations around Boston Harbor until July 15, and they’re now open to the public for free tours.
”We were just on the Denis Sullivan. It was wonderful. The crew were wonderful,” one woman said. “The ship has a lot of history in Wisconsin and I am from Milwaukee so it was just really awesome to be able to see it.”
”They look a lot bigger on the water and then once you’re on it, you’re kind of like oh my gosh like this is a ship that’s really built for people. They look a lot bigger,” another woman said.
The ships will be here until Wednesday. There will be a fireworks display that night, in addition to the one that’s tonight starting at 9:15.
Located on the water’s edge, the Sail Boston Festival is free for all, and no registration is required.
“Everything that happens in this is what we are all about in Boston, we are showing the world what Boston stands for,” said Michael Mooney, the president and chairman of the Sail Boston Board of Directors.
Here’s more about the Sail Boston events happening in the city through Wednesday.

Tall Ships Depart – Thursday, July 16, Boston Harbor
The Tall Ships will depart Boston Harbor on Thursday morning.
U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle
NBC10 Boston’s Glenn Jones was aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle as it sailed from New York City to Boston Harbor. He brought us live reports from the ship starting last Wednesday, with his last today.
The U.S. Tall Ship has been on quite the journey to celebrate America’s 250th. She started in New Orleans and sailed up the East Coast, ending this weekend in Boston. Wherever she goes, she draws and dazzles a crowd.
For the DeVereaux family from Situate, it’s also about legacy. A retired Coast Guard captain with two sons — one at the Maritime Academy, the other a cadet on the Eagle.
“For Alex and I to be on today is just a privilege. Absolute privilege. An honor to be here. So this is a family opportunity today,” Marc DeVereaux said.
Admiral Michael Platt is feeling that pride, too. As a 7-year-old growing up in Boston, his grandfather took him to the 1976 Tall Ships parade. It lit a spark. He’s now commander for the Northeaster.
“Fifty years ago I was on land watching the Eagle sail into Boston. Now I’m on the Eagle 50 years later sailing into Boston,” Platt said. “I tell that story to my staff about my grandfather and his pipe and showing off the Eagle, and so they bought me a pipe in a thrift store. Now I just have to find another 7-year-old boy or girl and try to influence them.”
Every guest aboard the Eagle on Saturday had a connection to her. Stories can go back as far as 1946 when the German-built ship was commissioned a U.S. Coast Guard Cutter. Since then, she has taught countless cadets. She has braved many storms. She’s still sailing. She has no quit. She embodies history, and is a perennial star in any parade.
“We teach these kids how to get salty, what it means to serve at sea,” Capt. Ensley said.
While in port, cadets will get free time to explore Boston, and the public gets the chance to explore the Eagle. Starting Sunday, she’ll be open for tours at the Charlestown Navy Yard.

Trading soccer balls for sails
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has said Sail Boston is just the latest event as part of what’s been a “mega summer” in the city.
“We’ve enjoyed getting to see the world get to know what Boston gets to see on a regular basis,” she said, calling Sail Boston “a huge centerpiece of this summer.”
It’s already been a busy few weeks with Boston Stadium hosting seven World Cup games in Foxborough, and everyone is ready to keep the good times rolling.
Neighborhoods like Charlestown are preparing to welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors. At “The Anchor” in the Navy Yard, they’re now preparing to welcome tall ship fans after showing every single World Cup match.
“I have been told they are going to be coming in droves,” Shelby Elwell said. “It has been absolutely incredible, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities I keep telling everyone but we have seen such an electric energy from everyone.”
Held in Boston previously in 1992, 2000, 2009, and 2017, Sail Boston has welcomed millions of spectators and generated millions of dollars in economic impact for the region.
Weather forecast
We have a nice weekend in store for the start of Sail Boston.
Temperatures rise quickly to start next week as we face down another possible heat wave.
