Wolves star Joao Gomes has previously been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United this summer
Manchester United’s move for Youri Tielemans is likely to affect the future of Wolves star Joao Gomes. The Brazilian has been linked with United for some time and appeared set to leave Molineux this summer.
Atletico Madrid were closing in on a deal to sign Gomes from Wolves following their relegation from the Premier League, but that move has fallen through in recent days.
The La Liga outfit have since chosen to pursue a deal for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Morten Hjulmand, meaning that Gomes’ future now remains uncertain.
United had been heavily linked with signing Gomes and it appeared that this summer, above all others, would be the most likely time for a deal to happen with the Reds’ need to strengthen the middle of the park.
However, with Andrey Santos closing in on a £50million deal from Chelsea and Tielemans potentially moving to Old Trafford for £35m, the chances of Gomes also being signed are not likely.
It now remains to be seen what the future holds for Gomes this summer, who recently returned to first-team training at Wolves.
Villa themselves could now be in the market for a new midfielder with Tielemans set to depart to join United, although whether bitter rivals Wolves would look to sell one of their star players to them remains to be seen.
Switzerland international and Freiburg star Johan Manzambi has recently emerged as a target for Villa, with suggestions that a £51m deal is close to being completed.

There have also been suggestions that Liverpool could be in the running to sign Gomes this summer, while United were mentioned as a potential destination at the time.
However, with Santos on the verge of being signed and a deal for Tielemans now in the works, a move for Gomes may no longer be something that United are looking at.
There is also the uncertainty of the future of Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who had agreed to become a United player earlier this summer.
United had agreed a £35m initial fee with the Serie A outfit, along with £3.8m more in add-ons, but it’s now unclear if the Brazil international will move to Old Trafford or not.
