A police officer has been injured in a crash which left a police car badly damaged in Darlington. The police vehicle is reported to have collided with another car at the traffic light junction with Portland Place on Woodland Road in Darlington, shortly before 6.30am on Tuesday.

Durham Constabulary confirmed that the officer at the wheel was responding to an emergency call at Darlington Memorial Hospital at the time of the incident. The officer, who sustained a suspected broken arm, was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment.

Following the collision, emergency services including the North East Ambulance Service were called to the scene. Officers cordoned off a stretch of road between St Augustine's Way and Stanhope Road North for several hours, with drivers urged to find alternative routes.

Images from the scene capture the extent of the damage, with a number of vehicles visible behind the cordon and the front bumper of the police car left severely crumpled. The driver of the other vehicle involved was left with a bump to their head, reports Chronicle Live.

A Durham Constabulary spokesperson said: "The officer was driving a police car on blue lights just before 6.30am when they were involved in a collision on Woodland Road. They were responding to a call for assistance at Darlington Memorial Hospital when the collision occurred."

"The officer was taken to hospital for treatment for a suspected broken arm. The driver of the other vehicle sustained a bump to their head. The road was closed in both directions while enquiries were carried out at the scene and the vehicles recovered, but has since reopened."

A NEAS spokesperson said: "We received a call at 6:33am this morning (14 July) to reports of a road traffic incident on Woodland Road in Darlington. We sent one emergency ambulance to the scene along with police colleagues who also attended.

"There were three patients at the scene but none required transport to hospital by ambulance."
