One person has been taken to hospital after a serious crash in the York Street area of north Belfast.

The PSNI said just before 8am on Thursday that roads were closed between Limestone Road and North Queen Street, Mountcollyer Avenue, and York Street on either side of these junctions. Road users have been advised to seek an alternative route.

In a statement, the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service confirmed it received a 999 call at 02:37 on Thursday, July 16, following reports of a road traffic collision in the York Road area of Belfast.

A spokesperson added: "NIAS tasked two emergency ambulances to the incident. Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, one patient was brought to Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast by ambulance."

DUP MLA Phillip Brett has said that he is “deeply saddened” by the “very serious road traffic incident".

“The local community is in shock at the seriousness of what has happened, and my thoughts are with everyone affected, together with their families and loved ones, at this incredibly difficult time,” Mr Brett said.

“I understand an arrest has been made and that a PSNI investigation is now underway. It is essential that the police are given the time and space to carry out a full and thorough investigation. I would also encourage anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has CCTV, dashcam or other relevant footage, to contact the PSNI.

“Finally, I want to pay tribute to the emergency services who responded so quickly and professionally to what is clearly an extremely serious incident.”

In an earlier post on X, TrafficWatch NI said: "Road users are advised that York St with the junction of the Limestone Rd is currently closed due to an ongoing incident. PSNI are in attendance. Diversions are in place. Please finds an alternative route for your journey."
