One of the things I miss the most about university is being in an English lit seminar. Call me crazy, but I actually love the idea of spending a couple hours a day talking about the books I'm reading. And while I'll occasionally dip my toe into the world of BookTok for recommendations with a side of drama, there's just something about reading a book at the same time as everyone else that makes the entire experience and the subsequent discussion waaayyy better. I'm clearly not alone in this since it seems everyone and their dog is part of a book club now.
And it's not just regular, degular people that are starting their own book clubs. Celebrities are getting in on it, too — I'm not just talking about Oprah! Here are 13 celeb book clubs that'll actually make you want to read more:
1.
Oprah Winfrey launched her eponymous book club three decades ago in 1996, and all these years later she continues to hold the title as the biggest celeb book club. Her first pick, The Deep End of the Ocean by Jacquelyn Mitchard sold over 3 million copies after Oprah endorsed the novel on her show, which was quickly called "The Oprah Effect."
2.
In 2016, Reese Witherspoon founded her own media company, Hello Sunshine, to create a space that champions female creators across film, television, and literature. Just a year later, she started Reese's Book Club, and it's truly changed the Hollywood game with many of her monthly picks not only ending up on the New York Times bestsellers list, but also being adapted into major films and TV shows through her production company.
3.
One of the newest (and buzziest) celeb book clubs is Dua Lipa's Service95 Book Club. It started as an extension of her lifestyle website, but it's truly become the best part of her online community. Over the years, she's interviewed some incredible authors including Roxane Gay (who has her own book club), Mark Ronson (who wrote a memoir about his experiences in New York's hip-hop and club scene in the '90s), and Canadian legend Margaret Atwood (the pen behind The Handmaid’s Tale, Alias Grace, and The Testaments respectively).
4.
Emma Roberts' book club, Belletrist, was the idea that actually made it out of the chat with her best friend, Karah. Since its start in 2017, Emma has highlighted over 75 books, hosted a bunch of live readings, and expanded her book club into a production company — First Kill and Tell Me Lies are two series she's already produced.
5.
Just months before releasing her second book, Be a Triangle, Canadian actress and comedian Lilly Singh started her virtual book club, Lilly's Library, as a way to amplify South Asian authors. Her list already has dozens of novels, including a memoir by Malala Yousafzai and several books by Canadian author Uzma Jalaluddin.
6.
At the beginning of 2024, Dakota Johnson launched her own book club, naming it TeaTime Book Club after her production company, TeaTime Pictures. All of her picks are works of fiction and she's post regularly on her Instagram channel to chat and share extra resources about the novel of the month — think author's notes and curated playlists. In an interview, she shared that her intention behind the book club was to encourage readers to immerse themselves fully in the book their reading, "I want to fall down the rabbit hole every time I read… to invest in the book, invest in the language, invest in the references."
7.
Natalie Portman's eponymous book club is the equivalent of signing up for a English lit seminar. Her monthly selections are a perfect mix of classic novels, touching memoirs, and niche, fiction books, and she's also interviewed nearly half of the authors she's highlighted, giving you a true book club experience.
8.
Singer-songwriter Laufey launched her own book club The Laufey Book Club in 2022 to connect with her fans. Every few months she'll recommend a few books that are as dreamy, moody, and wonderful as her music. And when she's not reading books or she's making them. The Icelandic singer recently released her first book, a children's picture book called Mei Mei The Bunny.
9.
Kaia Gerber started a book club on Instagram Live at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. Four years later, she launched an official platform called Library Science. Her book list is filled with everything from essays and translated novels to poetry and plays, and even includes interviews with the authors she's highlighting on social media.
10.
RuPaul entered his book lover era in 2024, launching an independent, online bookstore called Allstora, an eponymous subscription-based book club, RuPaul's Book Club, and a new memoir, The House of Hidden Meanings, all within weeks of each other. Every month, he shares one (or two) books that'll have you laughing, crying, thinking deeply about your life choices.
11.
Over the last few years, Queen Camilla has cemented her place as the British royal family's biggest book lover. She's not only an avid reader, she's also the patron of six major literary charities in the UK. What started out as a simple list of book recommendations during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2021, turned into an official book club and global charity called The Queen's Reading Room. Every season, Her Majesty shares four of her favourite books that are written by authors from around the world, along with some classic British titles, too.
12.
In 2012, Florence Welch posted a photo of herself in front of the largest independent bookstore in the world, Powell's Books, in Portland, Oregon and a fan commented on the tweet, saying the English singer should start a book club. The rest, as they say, is history. Between Two Books was born and is now filled with seasonal book recommendations from Florence and guest recos from other celebs like Greta Gerwig, Nick Cave, Fiona Apple, and Adwoa Aboah.
13.
And finally, John Mulaney started his new book club, Mulaney Reads, on Instagram in 2025. Once a month, the comedian shares his latest book obsession, and his choices are truly interesting. Spanning both decades and genres, John's book club touches everything from heartbreaking memoirs and coming-of-age classics to noir fiction novels from the 1940s.
14.
An honourable mention: After years of hosting a private book club and playing the book-loving New York writer Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City, Sarah Jessica Parker launched her own imprint, SJP Lit, in 2022. The actress-turned-publisher frequently publishes women writers, and so many of them are written by new and emerging authors. We love to see it!
15.
Another honourable mention: In 2022, Mindy Kaling joined forces with Amazon to launch her own imprint, Mindy's Book Studio. Not only does Mindy feature books by women of colour, she also gets to option the books for future adaptations on Prime. And as one of the mighty pens behind some of our favourites shows like The Office, The Mindy Project, and Running Point, it's so exciting to hear that she already has two potential projects to work on in the near future.
