“I Was Embarrassed That I Had Such Superficial Opinions On Her”: 18 Celeb Memoirs That Totally Floored Readers

“To see her rise from the ashes again and again despite how the media treated her in the ’90s is an inspiration...”

Recently, I rounded up some of the worst celebrity memoirs people have ever read. In the comments, members of the BuzzFeed Community shared some celeb memoirs that actually changed their opinion of a famous person for the better.

1. "I never gave any thought to Jeanette McCurdy, even though I did watch iCarly. Her book, I'm Glad My Mom Died, was excellent and so eye-opening. It makes me want to support her in any future projects she has."

2. "Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. I used to view him as just that slightly annoying guy from The Daily Show commercials, but his autobiography was phenomenal. Now I have so much respect for him."

3. "I'm mortally embarrassed to say this, but Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business by Dolly Parton. I originally thought she was a whatever celebrity who dressed up for attention. When I looked more into her life and her story, I was embarrassed that I had such superficial opinions on her. I didn't realize she was arguably the most amazing, beautiful, generous individual who has ever walked this world. When Dolly Parton passes away, everybody else is going to move up one in the world. What a total gem."

4. "Pamela Anderson's memoir, Love, Pamela. She really went through some awful times, and to see her rise from the ashes again and again despite how the media treated her in the '90s is an inspiration. She was penalized for a sex tape. She survived multiple sexual assaults early in childhood, and that was just the start! Her outlook on life is also just gorgeous, as she's now between France and Canada."

5. "I recommend I Must Say by Martin Short. It's insightful, humble, honest, a little heartbreaking, and funny without trying too hard. Feels like you're having a conversation with him."

6. "Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain. Bought a copy on a work trip in 2000 and finished it in one sitting. It changed my worldview for the better, especially how we look at people who cook."

7. "Second Wind: The Memoirs of an Opinionated Man by Bill Russell, the late NBA champion. Yes, there is basketball in the book. There is also love, family, sex, politics, compassion, and explanations. I learned a great deal about life — his and mine — by reading it. Amazingly, it was published when he was 44. He died at 88. RIP, sir."

8. "I recently read Tom Felton's book, Beyond the Wand. I didn't know a lot about him going into it, but I came out really liking him as a person. I have huge respect for him."

9. "The biggest surprise: Marilu Henner of sitcom fame. Her co-written memoir, By All Means Keep on Moving, is so interesting and well done that I've read it three times! She talks about her romances and career, with juicy information that doesn't feel exploitative. Just ignore the health tips and poop information at the end."

10. "Stanley Tucci's Taste only solidified my admiration for him. It's a great read, and I was so relieved that he was both humble about his beginnings and recognized his privilege now. He is such a class act, and the autobiography was so interesting, seeing as it is through the food in his life. It also has little recipes in it."

11. "Reading Alex Trebek's And the Answer Is... was hilarious, and it gave me a much better idea of who he was, how he approached life as the long-term host of Jeopardy!, and how he got where he was."

13. "I really like Debbie Reynolds's memoirs, Debbie: My Life and Unsinkable. I didn't know her that well before, but I came away with so much respect for her!"

15. "The Rural Diaries by Hilarie Burton Morgan. I knew who she was, but I really had no opinionsof her as an actor or as a person. Recently, I've been really enjoying listening to memoirs read by the authors themselves. Hers had no wait on Libby, so I checked it out. Loved every minute of it. Her stories about farming, gardening, fixing up old homes, fertility, and motherhood were so heartwarming."

16. "Writer Hilary Mantel's Giving Up the Ghost, in particular, her battle with endometriosis, the lack of compassion and care by doctors for her, and the punishment the disease took on her body. And she's very unsentimental about it all. I have a lot of admiration for that woman."

17. "Writer J. G. Ballard's memories of growing up in Shanghai and being imprisoned in a Japanese internment camp in Miracles of Life: Shanghai to Shepperton. A lot of the pointless brutality and constant collapse he saw as a child makes the decay, obsession, and apocalypse in his books make much more sense."

18. And finally: "I always enjoyed Mick Foley's wrestling characters, but he wasn't a big persona on my radar until I met him for a signing of his most recent autobiography, Saint Mick: My Journey from Hardcore Legend to Santa's Jolly Elf. My cousins brought me and got me a copy, and he was so sweet and friendly during the signing that I devoured his book in three days. He's a skilled writer and storyteller, and he's easily one of the kindest, most genuine people I've ever met. Mick Foley for Santa Claus."

Which celebrity memoir changed the way you view a certain celeb? Why? Share your thoughts in the comments or in the anonymous comments box below!
