“I Laughed So Hard I Started Crying On The Bus”: People Are Sharing The Funniest Books They’ve Ever Read, And They’re Soooo Good
“My dad said he had to stop listening while on a road trip because he kept laughing so hard he almost drove off the road.”
A wise man* once said, "Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read." And I firmly believe that a book that can make you laugh is one of the best yet most elusive reads.
Recently, people on Reddit have been sharing the books that actually made them laugh out loud, and their recommendations are too good to keep to myself. Here's what they had to say:
1.
"Currently reading Me Talk Pretty One Day in a hospital waiting room. Getting odd looks as I can’t stop myself from laughing out loud. I wish he wrote full novels."
3.
"The Princess Bride by William Goldman. It’s even better than the movie, and the adaptation was excellent."
4.
"Seth Rogen’s Yearbook is genuinely hilarious. I love Seth in general, but the stories he tells in his memoir are so good."
5.
"The Dungeon Crawler Carl series. My husband hasn’t laughed out loud reading since…probably ever, but is constantly audibly cracking up as he’s made his way through the series. And there are a TON of books in the series, as well as other series by the same author."
7.
"Recently, I read Heartburn by Nora Ephron, and her passages about her mom made me genuinely laugh out loud."
8.
"Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. If you've ever been in the military, you’ll laugh out loud every second page."
10.
"If you like fantasy, try The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman! The author is a comedian, and it shows. Thoroughly enjoyable novel!!"
12.
"I found Starter Villain by John Scalzi snort coffee through the nose funny."
16.
"Anything by Carl Hiassen. All his Florida-based novels are riotously funny. Of particularly contemporary interest is Squeeze Me, a tale of a president and his 'Potussy.'"
17.
"The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion by Beth Brower. The ridiculous situations the main character gets into are hilarious. It's like if Anne Shirley were in her early 20s and living in 1883 London. My favorite parts are the neighborhood quirks. They do have to be read in order, and book 1 is not as laugh-out-loud, but once you get into book 2, it is so clever and funny."
18.
"Glory Days by Simon Rich. Very funny short stories, many first published in The New Yorker. Rich was a writing partner with John Mulaney at SNL."
22.
And finally, "I just finished Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton. It’s a post-apocalyptic novel told from the point of view of a domesticated crow named Shit Turd (S.T. for short). I loved it. It was so funny and well-written, and a great story too."
