Creating an atmosphere where athletes of all abilities can test themselves is what makes the Harrogate and District Summer Race League so popular.

The fourth race of the series was held in Ilkley on the last day of June, excellently hosted by Ilkley Harriers.

With the start and finish near the rugby club, heavy rain which started at the same time as the race might have been welcome for some competitors.

The tough route of almost five miles had a big climb for the first two miles before a nice downhill and flat section thereafter.

From the six club members racing, David Hack was the first one back in 31st overall, 5th M45 in 31m52s, Paul Simpson 68th, 11th M50 in 34m01s, Nicola Simpson 91st, 1st F50 in 35m, Rebecca Smith 113th, 9th FSEN in 36m07s, Pauline Whittaker 285th, 9th F60 in 45m48s, and Gail Smith 296th, 10th F60 in 47m01s.

DalesRunner hosted another superbly organised trail race on July 4th, the DR30 (30km), and Laurence Corbett mastered the spectacular course in Swaledale with riverside paths to remote moorland and challenging ascents and descents.

He finished 11th overall, 1st V50 in 3h16m17s.

For runners wanting something shorter, the Swinner Swagger (15km) was on the same day and follows the second half of the DR30 route.

The Black Sheep 6 hour challenge took place in Masham on July 5th with runners completing as many 3.5-mile loops as they wish.

Anthony Jefford did 2 laps in 49m41s.

Paul Berry was in Germany competing at one of the world's premier long-distance triathlons, the gruelling Challenge Roth (140.6 miles).

His combined time for the Swim/Bike/Run was 10h55m22s.

Pauline Whittaker has been at the Monkton Stadium in Jarrow for the NEMAA Track & Field League.

At meeting 3 she came 2nd in age in the 100m in 17.2s, 2nd in age in 400m in 1m25s and was 1st in age in the Javelin with a throw of 16.06m.

At meeting 4 she was 3rd in age in the 200m in 37s, 3rd in age in the 300m in 1m02s and 1st in age in the Shot put with a throw of 7.07m.

There was warm weather for runners at Croft Circuit the evening of July 8th for the Pitstop 5k & 10k.

In the shorter 5k distance, Anthony Jefford finished 2nd overall in 18m56s and in the 10k race, Phil Sharpe was 4th in 38m58s.

Heatwave conditions continued for competitors on July 10th at the Evensplits York 5k, the 6th race in the series at the University of York Sport Village Cycle Circuit.

From the five club members competing, Sam Johnson was the first to finish in 44th place overall in 19m12s, Jonathan Simpson 52nd in 19m56s, Paul Simpson 56th in 20m11s, Edward Dunn 61st in 20m35s, and Nicola Simpson 65th in 21m52s.
