A dominant club display saw Isle of Wight runners clinch top honours and personal bests.

At the Lordshill 10km Road Race, a strong Ryde Harriers team delivered standout performances in the final Hampshire Road Race League meeting.

Chris Newnham took the men’s title in 31 minutes and 56 seconds, having led early before breaking away on the closing climb to secure a commanding win.

Carly Scoble claimed victory in the women’s race and set a new personal best of 37 minutes and 45 seconds, overtaking the leader in the later stages and holding her position to the finish.

Daniel Furmidge finished 14th overall in 35 minutes and seven seconds, winning the M50 category.

Steve Hargrove took second place in the M60 category with a time of 40 minutes and 53 seconds.

Geoff Watkin of Ryde Harriers said: "This was an excellent all round Ryde Harrier club performance and in such a large field, seeing the club do so well and taking the two top individual positions as well as top places in the Master’s categories. Well done all Harriers that competed."

The race drew 800 athletes and took place in rising heat and humidity, adding another challenge to the already competitive field.

All runners completed an out-and-back course, beginning with a fast downhill first kilometre.

Mr Newnham took an early lead before joining the front group as Josh Price of Vectis Academy slowed the pace.

By the return leg, just three runners remained in contention, with Mr Newnham pulling clear on the final climb to take victory.
