There is concern that the situation may become more difficult to resolve if prompt action is not taken

Angry residents are demanding the city council take urgent action to remove Travellers from a Derby park - the second time in under a month despite security measures being introduced.

People living in the Sunnyhill area say that Qualcast Park is an "important community asset used by families, children and local sports groups".

One person, who did not wish to be named, said: "Despite the recent installation of new collapsible security bollards intended to improve protection of the park, vehicles have once again gained access, leading local residents to question whether the current security measures are adequate.

"The remaining unprotected section of the park boundary without bollards allowed vehicles to gain access.

"Local residents say the encampment is preventing full public use of the park and has caused significant concern, particularly regarding access to the children's play area and the safety of members of the public using the park and the footpaths that cross it, as vehicles associated with the encampment have been driving across open parkland rather than remaining on designated access routes."

There is also growing frustration as additional caravans and vehicles have reportedly arrived since the initial encampment, increasing concerns that the situation may become more difficult to resolve if prompt action is not taken.

Another resident, who also did not wish to be named, remarked: "Residents acknowledge that Derby City Council must follow the legal process before any enforcement action can be taken.

"However, they are asking the council to prioritise and, where legally possible, accelerate that process in order to restore the park to public use as quickly as possible.

"We also want the council to review the effectiveness of the current security arrangements and consider more robust measures to prevent repeated unauthorised access in the future, reducing the disruption and cost associated with recurring encampments.

"We hope that a long-term solution can now be found that protects the park for the benefit of everyone who uses it."

Some residents have taken to social media to register their feelings about the situation. One person wrote: "Do you think it would be possible to put up some stylish, maybe waist height, iron railings around Qualcast Park?

"After having had Travellers there for the last week and seeing rubbish bags, furniture, toilet roll, beer cans, plastic bottles, more rubbish bags, I just don’t think the park is that inviting currently."

Another person remarked that a car had been left behind when Travellers were removed previously.

Derby City Council said it was "working closely" with Derbyshire police and its partners to manage the recent arrival.

A council spokesman said: "Council officers have visited the site, engaged with the group, and are taking all necessary actions in line with our official policies and procedures.

“While the park remains fully open to the public, we advise visitors to exercise caution due to unauthorised vehicle movements on-site. We will continue to monitor the situation to ensure the area is managed appropriately."
