In this guide, we'll tell you how The Alters: Last Variable Base Building system works, how it's different from the base game, and how you can upgrade the size of your base so you can build more stuff.
You'll unlock more and more base modules as you progress through the story and complete research.
The Alters: Last Variable base building system is largely the same as the base building system of the base game, albeit with some changes. You don't have to worry about mass, there are a few different base modules, and the interior shape of the base is different. You also can't move the Airlock.
Base building takes place in the Command Center. This base module allows you to build new base modules, move around existing base modules, and remove existing base modules for a full refund (assuming they're not damaged).
The building interface also provides you with a "holding area" on the right of the screen. This is not part of your actual base; rather, it gives you somewhere where you can temporarily hold base modules while you're rearranging things.
In The Alters, your base was contained within a giant moving wheel that traveled across the planet. Last Variable changes up the formula by placing you in a static underground base that doesn't move (and on a map that doesn't change, too).
Story differences aside, your underground base has a different shape compared to the neat symmetry of the base game's structure. You'll need to get creative with moving things around if you want to have a well-equipped base.
Most base modules require Metals, and some of the large or more complex modules will need Minerals or other resources. The time pressure in The Alters: Last Variable is considerably less than in the core game, so take your time to make your base as good as you can.
How to Increase Your Base Size in The Alters: Last VariableYou can increase your base size in The Alters: Last Variable by increasing your Qubit level and researching the next base upgrade. Check out our research guide to learn how to increase your Qubit level.
