Middlesbrough have pulled off what is considered a major coup after completing the signing of striker Will Lankshear from Tottenham Hotspur.

A long-term Boro target, they beat competition from the likes of Wolves, Southampton and Sporting CP to land the 21-year-old.

Officially an undisclosed fee, it’s understood the package agreed between Boro and Spurs is worth £8 million initailly, but could rise to £20m if certain performance-related add-ons are met. Lankshear has signed a five-year deal at the Riverside.

As well as the fee, the two clubs agreed on a future sell-on fee clause being inserted into the deal, while Tottenham also have a matching right on future bids clause which means if Boro ever accept an offer for the striker, Spurs will be notified and entitled to match it.

His arrival was seen as a major target for Boro this summer, with officials at the club tracking the centre-forward for well over two years as part of their policy to keep a close eye on emerging talents in the academies of elite clubs.

That long-standing interest, as well as the prospect of regular game-time at a new permanent home, is understood to have been instrumental in convincing Lankshear to move to Teesside, given the financial might of the other clubs interested.

Wolves, Southampton and Sporting CP are all understood to have had offers turned down for Lankshear this summer, before Boro managed to agree a deal with the north London outfit.

His move to Boro follows an impressive season on loan at Oxford United. Despite the U’s relegation from the Championship, Lankshear managed 12 goals and was widely considered one of the most impressive number nines in the division.

He impressed with his finishing and clever movement and anticipation in the penalty area, while his physical prowess saw him link-up play well too. It’s felt that, with Boro creating many more chances than Oxford, he can go way better than the 12 goals he scored last term.

Signing a new striker this summer was one of Boro’s top priorities after a lack of goals proved costly in their failed pursuit of promotion last term.

Lankshear will compete with David Strelec for a spot in the Boro team next term, while his arrival leaves the future of Kaly Sene in doubt. Kim Hellberg has indicated he will continue to use Tommy Conway out wide, while Kyle Joseph has also arrived this summer and can operate as a wide forward or central striker too.

Lankshear becomes Boro's third signing of the summer transfer window, following Joseph and former Oxford team-mate Myles Peart-Harris through the door. Recruitment work continues as they look to strengthen Hellberg's squad in more key areas before the end of the window.
