Will Lankshear says his aim is to help Middlesbrough get back to the Premier League, explaining how the project to do so under Kim Hellberg enticed him to the club.
Boro have pulled off what is considered a major coup in landing the 21-year-old striker from Tottenham this summer. As well as rejected offers from Southampton, Wolves and Sporting CP, Lankshear is understood to have been attracting the interest of Premier League clubs.
But after Boro agreed a deal with Spurs for an initial £8 million, with potential for £12m more in add-ons, Lankshear was sold on the move to the Riverside and signed a five-year deal at the club.
Explaining his reasons, he told the club website: “I'm really delighted to be here. It's such a big club and I can't wait to get started.
“It's been a little bit chaotic but there's just excitement really. I couldn't wait to come up, get started, meet everyone and I'm really buzzing to be here.
“Middlesbrough is such a massive club. I deem it to be a Premier League club. The project here really excites me. I can't wait to get started, help, be part of the journey and get the club back to where it belongs.
“I feel like now is the best time of my career. I'm ready to take responsibility, hit the ground running and help this club.”
Lankshear was highly coveted this summer after impressing on loan at Oxford United last term. Despite their relegation, he managed 12 goals for the U’s.
That also meant he played against Kim Hellberg’s Boro, and kept a general eye on their performances under the Swede.
On Hellberg’s influence on his decision to join Boro, Lankshear added: It's really exciting. Playing against Middlesbrough last year, they were really tough games.
“The football they played last season was unbelievable; in my opinion the best in the league, and I'm really excited to be involved in that. The football is amazing. The manager is a tactical genius.”
Lankshear became the third summer signing for Boro after the prior arrivals of Kyle Joseph and his former Oxford team-mate Myles Peart-Harris.
Boro are plotting more big deals before the window closes, however, and are believed to be progressing well on a number of fronts as they aim to challenge for promotion next term.
Middlesbrough are preparing for a big summer as they look to rebuild from the heartarche of missing out on promotion to the Premier League.
