Max Arfsten discussed the possibility of a move to Europe amid interest from Middlesbrough

Max Arfsten admits it would be a dream for him to play in Europe as he didn’t close down suggestions of a transfer to Middlesbrough this summer.

Arftsen is Boro’s top left-back target this summer, as they reignite their interest in the USA international, who they’ve been tracking for almost two years now.

As things stand, however, no agreement is in place between Boro and Columbus Crew, while Arfsten himself is understood to have multiple clubs showing interest in him.

The 25-year-old returned to Columbus Crew on Monday after a short break following his involvement with the USA at the World Cup. He was put straight in front of the media ahead of their return to MLS action on Thursday morning (BST) against New York City.

It comes as reports widely link Arfsten with a move to Boro. Inevitably he was asked about his future at Columbus, and if he knew whether he’d be leaving in the near future.

He said: “I hate to give the politically correct answer, but right now, I’m playing for Columbus Crew. I’m training today and I’m focused on that.

“I don’t really know what’s going to happen in the future. But right now, I’m enjoying my time back, I’m excited to see all my team-mates, and I’m excited to train today.”

But asked if he feels ready to make a jump to play in Europe, he admitted: “It’s definitely a dream of mine, just as I think it would be for most people.

“I do feel that, playing-wise, yeah, I’m ready for that step. But, at the same time, we’ll see what happens.”

Despite that, Arftsen assured he remained professional and focused on representing Columbus Crew, until told otherwise.

He continued: “Returning after the World Cup, I just want to affect this environment in a positive way. Obviously it was a really cool experience for me, and I think all my team-mates are happy for me.

“So now, I feel compelled to impact the group in a positive way - bring my experience and use that in a positive way - and give my all for this club.”

Arften only managed one minute of action for the USA during this summer’s tournament. Fulham star Antonee Robinson is ahead of him in the pecking order for the left-back spot. Nevertheless, he has huge pride to have been part of the experience.

“It was a truly amazing experience for me,” Arfsten said. “Just to be part of the group and to experience everything - from training to the games and just everything that comes with being part of the squad for a World Cup.

“It was an unforgettable experience with a lot of good memories, particularly because it was in the United States. That made it easier for my family and friends to be there.”
